(USA) Official NPD Numbers for December: 1.1m 360s
Posted by XanTium | January 11 20:09 EST

From gamasutra.com:
[QUOTE]
According to the official hardware statistics released this afternoon, the PlayStation 2 continued to be a popular platform at retail, selling 1.4 million units for the month (37.1 million to date in the U.S.). The Xbox 360 also impressed, selling 1.1 million in December (with 4.5 million lifetime to date), while the Wii sold 604,200 units for the month, putting its total North American number sold at 1.1 million units.

Elsewhere, the severely supply-constricted PlayStation 3 was found to have sold through 490,700 units for the period, with 687,300 units sold since its launch in November - no doubt a disappointment for Sony.

Other data released by NPD this afternoon includes specific accessories sold throughout December, the most popular of while was Microsoft's official Xbox 360 wireless controller, which sold 832,800 units during the month.

"Elsewhere, the severely supply-constricted PlayStation 3"

The news keeps saying this but in the SF bay area the PS3 is READILY available in both the 20 and 60 gig models. Just sitting on the shelves at many different retailers in my neck of the woods at least.

NDP numbers are the only official numbers for sales in USA.
If you don't believe gamasutra, you can also find the December NDP numbers on http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=c...25&Itemid=2

The PS3 is sitting on store shelves here. It is sitting on shelves in many other cities. The biggest city in my state still has plenty of PoS3s in stock.

On the other hand Wii isn't in stock anywhere at regular retail price. You could pre-order a big bundle for the last few days...but even that isn't available any more.

Wii has stomped the PS3 so far... and the Wii is more supply restricted than the PS3 at this point.

Xantium, I demand you to tell me who the hell is buying all these PS2s!

lol, but seriously, Wii60 FTW!!!

...I saw 2 60gb PS3s at a local target...I took a pic on my cellphone. I was more interested in the fact that they had like ~9 wiimotes and like ~7 nunchucks!

non-hardcore gamers who just want to play some good games for a nice price.
Don't underestimate the power of games like Buzz and Singstar either ... it dragging a whole new market to video game consoles.

If you want it that bad you can come to the US and get one. They're collecting more dust than the original Nintendos at this point. I see them everywhere I go now. I'm tired of seeing PS3, but I have yet to see a Wii sitting on a shelf. In fact it was just within the last couple of weeks that I finally got to see a box because of the display boxes. Ps3 is only restricted because it's price is restricting itself from being sold. Do youself a favor and wait far passed when they release in your country. I have yet to see any kind of gaming experience that demands the $600 price tag. In fact GoW kicks it's ass in any graphics I've seen so far.

Impressed??? It sold ONLY 1.1 million and 4.5mil in total means that they are FAR from 10 millions worldwide.

"NPD measures roughly 60 percent of U.S. video game-related retail sales and makes projections on the remainder of the market."

http://today.reuters.com/news/articleinves...7-Dec-2006+RTRS

NPD is not 100% cold hard fact.

I wouldn't say NPD is an "Official" number.

It would be more precise to say that NPD is ONLY the market research institution that tries to measure games retail results in the US and also is the source that has the largest access to retail chains/stores numbers, even that is NOT 100%.

It's the best we have in US, but I wouldn't go and say it's the official once it makes projections to get to the final numbers.

Specially when it tries to guess what Wal-Mart sold.

Those figures are only the sales in the US though. Remember to add Europe, Japan, Australia etc.

Also remember that Peter Moore tells people to look at the npd data for more accurate numbers on install base then their own shipment numbers.
