Specialized 360 for IPTV in the works?
Posted by XanTium | January 16 10:13 EST

From xbox360fanboy.com:
[QUOTE]
Speaking with Major Nelson in his most recent podcast, Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg spoke of the possibility of a specially configured 360 built with IPTV and DVR functions in mind. When questioned about DVR functions and the possibility of a larger HDD, Greengerg said, "clearly the current way the Xbox 360 is designed is not for that ... we did not build this box to be a High Definition DVR." Greenberg further states that it's possible that consumers will eventually purchase some kind of IPTV upgrade (possibly referring only to a larger hard drive) or purchase an IPTV specific 360 "configuration" from a service provider. Greenberg points out that a larger hard drive is really only necessary for DVR functions and that it's possible to run IPTV without a hard drive at all.

This is a really interesting idea...

if they release an IPTV/PVR version of the 360 people wont even have to buy them... they could just rent them from their cable provider at the same price as any other set-top box.

I guarantee there are more people with set-top boxes then there are with even PS2s

forget the HDD/HDMI angle this is a incredibly creative and potentially lucrative business move on MS's part.

Wow i didn't think of it that way.....holly crap i might buy a PS3 now just to try and even the whole console war thing back up cause if M$ do this!!

THEY'VE WON!!! Hell even my mum would have one hahaha this is even cleverer than the WII's marketing....

Unbelivably clever!!!! M$ are the richest company in the world for this type of reason.. You can either get your Vista PC for your living room to surf and watch and play.... and then/or get a XBOX360 to watch and play And probably surf toooo.......

it really is starting to become a monopoly????

man just forget about that with the current UK ISP system every ones line is capped and throttled with a download max limit I found of 50GB, IPTV and HD content online is not going forward in here with the current system people will be forced out of their contracts in no time. my friend I my self are trying to change ISP cause they are Limiting there service soon, currently my average monthly DL 70GB any way I'm a legal Hardcore broadband user and looks like such people are not welcome by current ISPs these days...
Sorry about minor subject change.

hmm..this sounds interesting. i'm willing to bet this'll end up serving as a voip hub too by the time it rolls around. i wonder if they'll change the styling at all, maybe a flat front and silver instead, so that it fits in with most regular AV equipment, in that case it'll be interesting if the HD will be external again or not..hmmm.....it'd be nice if they did sell these externally then too. i'd love a 360 w/ bigger HD and maybe one that fits in more. but that's just me...the 360 i have now is awesome too! lol

Agreed!. I can hardly even use youtube between the hours of 6-11pm because my ISP throttles the line so bad. Watching IPTV here in the UK is still a while off since there seems to be too many people signing up for broadband and not enough capacity to take them. I'd really like the IPTV feature on my xbox though!. Suppose I'll just have to wait another couple of years sad.gif .

Listening to the podcast, they basically admitted there there will be a bigger HDD for the 360 at some stage, they also seemed to imply that the IPTV functionality would be some sort of add-on device with its own sub-processor because there's no way the 360 can do HD recording whilst playing Gears of War in its current state. Basically it's gonna be a TiVO with 360-dashboard integration. They said that it should be possible to watch IPTV without _any_ storage media attached to the 360, but as soon as you start multitasking then the HDD becomes a requirement.

Sounds pretty cool, pity there's no way inside of the next 3 years that it'll be any use over here in NZ. We still don't even have any Hi-Def channels.

EGM's the Q reported this a few months back....

Say what you say about EGM, but the Q has the best track record for rumors (at least to my knowledge).
He mentioned that his source told him that there was an HDMI version of the X360 with a larger HDD and DVR functionality in the works. And that it would be under some sort of tv provider such as DirecTV (IPTV in this case).

Good stuff!
And like Twisted said, chances are that you don't even have to buy the equipment.
The service provider will loan you the X360 smile.gif
(unless the provider actually sells it to you like DirecTV does....)

That is exactly what I was thinking - renting the 360 on a monthly basis for the IPTV/PVR ability.

I'm sure that MS was thinking this from the beginning, but getting a 1 year (and 10 million unit) head-set was more valuable. MS is closer and closer to owning the entire house...maybe we'll see MS cars, MS washers, dryers, and refridgerators, etc...

This seems all very well, but I think there is going to need to be some serious heat dissipation considerations. Most people have their set top box runnning constantly and many people already have issues with the 360 and heat dissipation as well as fan noise.

Though I'm sure they have considered this. Possibly, they will have a seperate processor for the DVR and IPTV functions like SteveNZ suggested. Either way, this is a very interesting idea. I would love to have one less box taking up space.
