Windows 2000 Pro up and running on the PS3 via Linux
Posted by XanTium | 19-1-2007 14:46 EST

From boardsus.playstation.com:
[QUOTE]
Yup it is real and took me all day. Got Qemu built, installed, and running in YDL and installed Windows 2000 Pro into a virtual machine then installed Wizardry Gold in Windows 2000 Pro. Complete with Soundblaster 16 sound. Used the Gimp in YDL to grab the screens. At any rate another milestone for the PS3! The YDL desktop is 50 inch HDTV so W2K is like about a 30 inch HD window?? Who said the PS3 was boring...

So we're taking Linux, then emulating a PC out of it?

That can't work too swell...

I do give the guy credit for taking the time to do it, and his web browser argument makes good logic, but still, if you need to browse the web from your HDTV and can afford a PS3 in the first place you can afford a laptop that would run Win2k and have the exact same browser with better speed, etc.

meh...emulating an OS with another OS doesn't sound too useful to me, especially with crippled graphics support.

Won't happen, most definately, but we might see MS-DOS or Win95 /98 games available.

What's the difference with XP on PS3?
The SAME emulator - qemu. It's emulating x86.
The difference is that the guy put install CD of win 2000 instead win XP!
Fucking Genius!

It will work as slow as XP on PS2 - 10 minutes of loading , 3 minutes of waiting for Start menu!

XP on qemu on PS3:

386DX40 is faster...

Lets see next super genius editors are fu**ing morons uneducated LAMERS news about quemu emulating on PS3:
DOS , WIN95 , WIN98, WIN98SE, WIN ME, WIN 2003.....

lol

go buy a computer for 300 or so off ebay if you want to run windows instead of on the ps3 with the keyboard and mouse on your lap

the only advantage on running DOS or old windows like 98,95, on quemu or another emulating program is that you can play the old games that xp doesnt let you play, even then u still don't have access to the rsx.BUT thats when the PC comes in.

It seems kind of pointless to run windows on the PS3. I dont see any reason to run it other than so you can say to your freinds 'Hey look, I have windows on my PS3!' I mean, it slow as hell, you only have 256mb of ram to use and no video acceleration......but meh, whatever floats your boat

Can the PS3 support printers?

It might be useful for word documents if it could

Yes and yes and windows have nothing to do with this smile.gif
PS3 should support printers just fine.
Running windows under a virtual machine however is pretty much useless. If you want to do word formating the nuse open office in linux which handles word documents just fine.

Running windows on a virtual machine under linux is trivial and not any kind of "milestone". It's just useless.

Wow, I hate Sony, period and would never buy a PS3 (if you can't tell I'm a hater). This interests me alot though to see they are already doing this.

Quite sad as soon as you guys get something cool you all bash it and say it's useless. Useless as it may be at least you guys have something cool to play with.

No wonder PS2 had almost nothing for SW, you guys don't appreciate anything. dry.gif

Great job to the guy who got this running, I don't even have a PS3 and probably never will, but I'm glad to see progress in the ps3 scene. smile.gif

The thing is not only that it's useless.
It's just that this isn't even an achievement smile.gif
Since there are virtual machine packages available for more or less all PPC distribution you can install one using only like one or two (very short) commands
In debian for PS3 for an example all you need to write to get this up and running is
"sudo apt-get update"
"sudo apt-get install vmware-player"

Then it's done, you just need to copy a win2k virtual image to your ps3 and there isn't anything else needed.

So basically.. this is nothing.
