Japanese Retailers: Used 360s over Used PS3s
Posted by XanTium | February 2 22:35 EST

From kotaku.com:
[QUOTE]
You might think that no one in Japan wants an Xbox 360. But you know what they want less? The 20 GB model of the PLAYSTATION 3. Mega retailer Sofmap is only giving 27,000 yen cash to folks trading in a used 20GB PS3...
...and 27,500 yen for a used Xbox 360 [Pro pack]. This is what you might call a raw deal for resellers, as the 20 GB model of the PS3 retails for 49,980 yen, while the 360 goes for a much cheaper 38,980.

I did notice that the used 360 market was drying up over here (Tokyo). Last SEP i bought a used premium for less than Y27000 (about $233 at the time) from Wanpaku (used game store). Ever since Blue Dragon the price has gone up. Used 60gb PS3's are running around Y53000

lets compare this in $ USD:

used ps3 (20GB) = $223.82

used xbox360 (pro pack) = $227.96

retail ps3 (20GB) = $414.32

retail xbox360 (??) = $323.13

first off, its a 4 dollar difference between a used ps3 with 20GB and controller, compared to the xbox360 pro pack with 20GB, controller, headset, silver live sub, and remote. the article doesnt say if the price is due to people switch from one console to the other. it also states that because the used 20GB version of the ps3 is only getting $4 less, that translates to japanese gamers "wanting a used ps3 less than a used xbox360".

really?

maybe resellers are cashing in on ps3 owners in japan not wanting thier 20GB ps3 in its current state, which is no games and a pretty lame ps3 network, and in march they can turn around and sell it for more when new releases hit the market.

my point is once you crunch the numbers, you cannot judge the success of a console based on what 1 reseller is taking for a used console. obviously ms is wary of the ps3 stance based on the media blitz of the live wireless headset, hd addon, 65 nm processes, etc..

i realize that this is a console war, and ms has a great foothold, a great headstart, and a slew of awesome games, along with a superb online service. but some of these articles are a joke, and sometimes i think they play on the knowledge that the average person wont crunch the numbers and compare apples to apples, only to give a certain "impression" and not actual facts. its a crap article.

btw i own a ps3 and an xbox360.

Currently in Japan the PS3 is only selling 3 times more then the 360, and considering the 360 is a supposed failure and the PS3 is only a couple of months old, that not too bad.

I would say the main reason for such a cheap price on PS3 trade is the fact they are over stocked with PS3s. They probably have a huge stock room full of them, and were caught out by the steep drop in demand.

i sure hope march comes through for all these people saying that march is gonna be the reprise of the ps3 cause of all the releases. i don't see any single title in march that makes me want to play my ps3.

and if the current trends hold true, most if not all will be delayed once again.

sony bit a turd this time and they can only blame themselves and their rather large pompous oversized ego and mouths.

Sony's eating their words and it's wonderful, they actually thought that the wii wouldn't be any competition and was a different audience glad to see that consumers are actually choosing quality over brand loyalty this

Good ol' Kotaku.
Hard hitting journalism with great basis.
LOL DEMAND DYING HAHAHA!

$5 difference and it a saturation vs unsaturated market.
No one buying X360 = rare person that does will pony up for it so we pay more
People do want PS3 = we give you low price and make more money off it

but it's kotaku, anything that's at one store in Japan = ALL OF JAPAN.

It's not the 5 dollar difference, is the difference in resale value that is the big difference.
