Microsoft responds to Watchdog
Posted by XanTium | February 14 11:36 EST

Microsoft responded in their typical denial-mode to BBC's Watchdog tv-show (more info / video) on gamesindustry.biz:
[QUOTE]
In an official statement issued to GamesIndustry.biz, Microsoft said that the "vast majority" of Xbox 360 owners have had an "outstanding experience" with the console.

But the platform holder went on to concede: "That being said, we have received a few isolated reports of consoles not working as expected.
"It's important to note that there is no systemic issue with Xbox 360 - each incident is unique and these customer inquiries are being handled on a case-by-case basis."

Microsoft has not revealed details of how many Xbox 360 units have been found faulty, but did state that the return rate is "significantly lower" than the CE industry average of between 3 and 5 per cent.

Well I can't speak of anyone elses experience, but everybody I know who has purchased a 360 has had it replaced, including me.

But you have to admire Microsoft's PR attempt laugh.gif

Extened warranty perhaps? If you get an extended or liftetime warranty from the store I don't see much of a problem.

Hopefully the 65NM CPU+GPU's will help, and I bet half of the complaints that emailed watchdog did the firmware upgrade laugh.gif.

Oftopic - My 18th birthday present (I'm 20 this month) was an Fujitsu Siemens Amilo A1630 laptop (AMD64 CPU, 512MB Ram, ATI Radeon 9700 -128MB ram, wireless card etc) broke two months out of warranty. It costs £830inc VAT, it's now a paper wait.

Found out the powersupply went bang and so did the powerboard, and the motherboard might be dead. Fujitsu Siemens want £100 just to look at it, and if it's the motherboard they want another £350. The PSU and Powerboard is £100 alone.

Don't you think I'm more angry and I can't do anything since only a few people are in my situation, and the sales of goods act didn't help either.

Only thing I can do is try and repair my 18th birthday present using spares from Ebay (which I can't afford).

Corporations are Evil, they want you to buy there next best thing withing 12 months to keep them going. Welcome to the world of Evil Business

Everyone I know with a 360 has had no problems (that includes 2 people with launch day systems). Never actually met anyone who has!. My 3 month old system is running as it should too (headset broke but that doesn't count).

Im on my second 360 due to the "Ring of Death" but I have found by using an intercooler on my new 360 this problem hasn’t happened again. I live and work in Mexico and have a small store selling consoles and repairing pc's, so I get a lot of inquires asking if I can repair there 360 problems all the time.
For Microsoft to say "a few isolated reports" is complete BS, isolated to this planet maybe! I have spoken to at least 30 people who have had the "ring of death" some with firmware upgrades, some without and some new 360's and some old the one common factor I have found is that none of them were using an secondary cooling system like the Nyko version for example ( no I don’t work for Nyko). So maybe this "Ring of Death" problem is caused by over heating, more than likely of the GPU. If Microsoft has installed heat sink fans then this problem may have never raised its ugly expensive head.
I cant remember the last time I saw a Video card for a PC without a fan of some type on the heat sink covering the GPU, the 360's GPU is ment to be so much better than some of the best Video cards on the market today so why did Microsoft fail to attach such a small cheap part to there’s?

They treat every case as a unique issue so they don't have to issue a recall. It seems like almost everyone is having the same issue if their 360 does break. Mine is fine but I've only had it since Christmas. I didn't get the extended warranty so I really hope my holds up.

We all know that the problem is not unique. It is Microsoft's defects in manufacturing/design, and it is not isolated. Poor soldering on the GPU, and the fact that when reheating the GPU fixes the problem (temporarily) proves this. Want more proof? Team Modfreakz removed the GPU of a red-lighting Xbox and found no surprises, they already knew what they were going to find. In some locations, there was no solder at all!

First link shows the bottom of the GPU. I see a lot of flat spots .. isn't there suppossed to be balls of solder there?

http://www.freepler.de/userdaten/38928917/...x360/gpu001.jpg

Second link shows the mainboard itslef. Again.. no solder in some locations.

http://www.freepler.de/userdaten/38928917/...x360/gpu004.jpg

Re-balling the GPU and the mainboard and soldering the GPU have fixed the problem. But last I checked it wasn't my responsibility to have expensive equipment and electrical engineering skills to make sure my Xbox 360 works.

Search "broken Xbox 360" on ebay and you'll find a ton of these. For Microsoft to say this isn't an issue is comparable to saying the levees in New Orleans were fine. The systems should be recalled, not dealt with on an individual basis.
