IBM Unveils World's Fastest eDRAM
Posted by XanTium | February 15 20:09 EST
From teamxbox.com: [QUOTE] At the International Solid State Circuits Conference (ISSCC), IBM has revealed a first-of-its-kind, on-chip memory technology that features the fastest access times ever recorded in eDRAM.
Embedded Dynamic Random Access Memory is the same type of memory used in the daughter-die of the Xbox 360's graphics processing unit. This new eDRAM designed by IBM, who helped create the three-core PowerPC central processing unit found in the Xbox 360, dramatically improves on-processor memory performance in about one-third the space with one-fifth the standby power of conventional static random access memory. wow it could make its way to the XBOX Third-gen
i agree

probably not, this technology will be "slow" by that time - the 360 and PS3 are expected to have quite long life cycles... faster, smaller, and less power required makes this some great memory...

I don't even know when these advancements will end! This is just the kind of technology needed to set a standard to but even then, it'll just get better, smaller, and faster. Wow, is there anything like this available for PC Users? I agree that these next gen consoles will have a long life cycles so it's good to know M$ has incorporated this into their wonderful system! Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet!

That isn't supposed to be used as RAM, it's supposed to be used as custom memory. Think about cache, it's something similar, it will probabily be embedded into CPU's and contain the kernel core (that's "critical" for speeding up things). EDRAM is the fast ATi VRAM and probably the fast CELL "local" 256K per SPE memory. It's useless as L1 cache (too slow and not associative-friendly, SRAM is faster), difficoult to use as L2 cache (slow and not associative) and probably not worth the effort to be used as L3 cache (still needs an associative counterpart for address matching), but it's surely useful to caching critical memory areas (so CPU can access vital memory structures and kernel code within 4-5 memory cycles bypassing the MMU too).

Strictly speaking, this technology is unfittable into a PC architecture. It could be used in the VGA subsystem (mainly because graphic architecture are non-standard) but there's no player in that field (ATi is now AMD, thus they have focusing in high performance integrated CPU/GPU, not in a really fast and distinct GPU) and nVidia is following a differnt path. More than this this technology rely on custom designed and optimized drivers (a no-go with PC).
