Halo 3 Multiplayer Beta FAQ
Posted by Iriez | February 16 16:00 EST

Today from bungie.net
[QUOTE]
Is Halo 3 beta registration closed?

Yes, phases one and two of the beta have already ended. If you haven't received an email by this point, then you were not one of the lucky few.

Is there no other way?!

If you didn't get in to either phase, then you can still get in by buying Crackdown , releasing in the US, on February 20 th . Inside every launch copy of Crackdown is an invite to the Halo 3 beta.

How will the Crackdown invite work?

Once the Halo 3 beta has been activated (start date is still TBD) you simply go to the Downloads menu in Crackdown to download the Halo 3 beta. After that, you will need to launch the Halo 3 beta from within Crackdown. You will need an Xbox 360 with a hard drive and an Xbox Live Gold account.

I'm an experienced beta tester with a PhD in Astrophysics and a minor in messaging Bungie to whine about the beta. Why wasn't I invited?

Microsoft did not choose beta testers based on merit, that would take far more manpower than is realistically possible. Phases one and two were both essentially lotteries or contests. Bungie was not actually responsible for those contests, but rather your local Microsoft Games Studios division. Messaging Frankie, Sketch, KP or any other Bungie employees is futile.

When does the beta start?

The beta will not start when Crackdown is released. The beta will go live when it's ready, which should be sometime this Spring. The team is currently busy whipping the included content into shape. Our goal is to deliver a fun, solid game experience though it will still very much be a "beta."

How long will the beta last?

The beta will only be playable for a limited time. Exact timing is still TBD.

Basically its not ready, don't know when it will be ready and your only chance at getting into the beta is if you buy the launch of Crackdown. sleeping.gif I don't know if I want to ruin my experience especially playing a game that I'm not sure is worth the money in the first place uhh.gif

Seriously, who wants a game based on drugs and petty rappish street crime?
I could just dig a 50 Cent game out of the dumpster.

Although, maybe busting the idiots would be fun...

Are you talking about Crackdown? If you are, then its clear you have not played the game. As fas as playability and fun, Crackdown is worth buying, even without a Halo 3 beta. Learn before you try and burn....

What kind of data and feedback is Bungie looking to glean from the beta?

We’re looking for a lot of things. Mainly the kinds of things that you cannot otherwise accomplish without the mass of people we'll have, such as stress-testing all of the backend stuff and networking. We’ll be keeping an eye on our forums for general feedback, but the primary goal is to gain valuable technical information that’s only possible when we have tens of thousands of simultaneous players across the world.

i was wondering why was it so "easy" (easy as just buy Crackdown and youīre a beta tester)
to be a Halo 3 beta tester.

i think that bungie is checking a new kind of multiplayer game AND/OR gamers limitation to play all at once.
i mean, in halo 2 what was the limit of all the players playing a multiplayer of OddBall or another game type?
16? 32? 8? i dont know because my original xbox is modded and my ONLY original game is Halo(1) and i have never played on Live with my letīs just call it borrowed Halo 2 game.

Letīs just pretend itīs just 16, iīm not sure. you correct me if iīm wrong but i think that just 64 players playing a multiplayer match on Live with a xbox360 is not enough. i would say that with all the different internet conections nowadays 80 or 90 players at once can be done, in my opinion.

Would you imagine meet 30 people at different countries in the world to play against other 30 people? Thatīd be awesome!!!

So what's the good in being invited to the Beta now if you have to buy Crackdown to play it anyway? Stupid. I'll wait for the actual release.

Man... where to start...

That's lame. That's a good place to start. It's amazing how Microsoft successfully masked a bait-and-switch tactic on the situation --- that's the first time anyone has ever officially dropped that the actual Halo 3 Beta release date was still TBA. How many individuals probably ran to their local GameStop or GameCrazy and pre-ordered/reserved their copy of Crackdown? I have a friend that did for that very reason. I personally tried the demo from live, and I admit like dude said a few posts ago, it's another GTA clone that's going to get old pretty quick. I'm into the multi-multiplayer games, so spend your money on something like Saint's Row that you can battle in the masses with.

I was reading some stuff on ign's front page of their web site recently about the recent demise of local multiplayer modes in games, and Halo 3 was showcased as the background. That reminded me of all of the games I picked up from GameStop to play multiplayer with -- aw yeah, we could get some serious FPS action goin' on once I get that new Doom game.... ahahahahahahaha RIGHT. I dropped $400 on a fully functional console and after all of that, I can't play these new games in groups on my own system? And one has to wonder... would it benefit those watching projected sales and bookkeeping, after the analysis of people that want to play the game, to not include my four-player-fun-on-one-box on Halo 3? Please tell me no; regardless of the rant, I'm a devout fan and will no less eventually play the Halo 3 beta on one of tha halmie's systems... I'm hopeful, what can I say.

And I don't like Crackdown ('s price for what it is), but if I want to get in on the Halo 3 goodness months ahead of time with the friends, I have to break bread and drop some loot on this GTA game. Man, don't get me wrong, the GTA series was revolutionizing; I loved the experience of all of them since GTA1. But the formula's kind of overused unless we're talking about people walking on the streets that remember you and mutter intelligent conversational tidbits, or throw the "live" world into a different setting like medieval times or one thousand years into the future, or maybe even a completely destructible environment....

I mean yea, inflation, COLA, cost of piracy, cost of competition in the game industry, etc etc, but why couldn't it just be bungie studios chillin' doin the game at their rate, maybe droppin a free demo like the other games (CRACKDOWN) WHEN they are ready to, and just setting an honest date that I can finally find out what the role of Master Chief is in the possible beginning and ending of the universe? AND get to see where they take those cool ass Energy Swords....

I ask too much; I think I'm supposed to sit and play Pac Man for a while now and brag about new media ads over the phone to tha halmies. -shaking head-

you know??

Sincerely,
one confusled dude in the Six One Nine
