Tesco stops refunds over 'free XBox' loophole
Posted by HSDEMONZ | February 17 17:09 EST

From Telegraph.Co.Uk

[QUOTE]
Tesco has abandoned its refunds policy after thousands of people exploited a loophole to get food, wines, DVDs and even computer games consoles for free.

Under the supermarket's long-standing "return and refund" policy, any customers who are overcharged at the till can get their money back -- and keep the item they have just bought -- without question.

Over the past few months, a growing number of self-styled consumer activists has been sharing information posted on websites deliberately to buy goods that are priced incorrectly and get a full refund.

The "R&Rers" have picked up frozen chicken nuggets, nappies, DVDs, mobile phones, computer games, beer and televisions.

A pricing error in January meant that XBox 360 games consoles were advertised in the store for £297.81. When the machines' bar codes were scanned at the till, customers were asked to pay £299.97 -- £2.16 more. Under the policy, Tesco allowed the shoppers to take the consoles for free.

that might be the dumbest store policy ever. pay a bunch of people a low wage. give them the burden of lost sales. you can't tell me some overpriced stuff on purpose to have their friends come and get it for free. what silly deal. price match, return and refund, layaway, whatever... but keep the goods and we'll give you your money back. doh, dolts.

i have never heard of any widespread problem of incorrect prices at scanning, so why would Tesco feel the need to enact a policy to encourage shoppers to visit their stores since "their prices scan correctly." and even with the policy it seems that they cannot get things to scan correctly in their stores.

if they can't figure out how to correct the prices in their database, they deserve to have people walk out with their goods for free...that's like business 101...amazing...

Tesco is mainly a supermarket, this policy was clearly not designed with Xbox 360s in mind. It sounds like it was designed to say "We fucked up, have this £5 whatever for free." I don't know why they didn't exclude expensive things like a games console from this policy, THAT was stupid.

And it won't be the minimum wage clerks who get the burden, it'll be whoever's supposed to make sure the price in the system is the same as the price advertised.

exactly, they should have only made the policy free for items under $20 or something...but really, I have never heard of a big enough problem (at least in the US) with incorrect prices that a store would even have such a policy like this to try and attract patrons...

I work at a tesco and we can only sell the product at what it is labeled as on the shelf but never give it away for free. Even then we can always refuse sale, and have done so in the past. I am very confused by this article

Edit: after a re-read i can see that this is for returning products. a very nice find! i had no idea this was our policy

Could have made the news when it hadn't been stopped! I'd have been walking out with trollies loaded with 360s, games and HDTVs.

Kroger Food Stores in TX has the same policy- or at least they did when I worked years ago. I used to be a cashier, so everytime a customer pointed out something was mispriced, I'd have a CSM give it to them free. Then, I'd go buy the same thing after my shift and get it free too. CSMs usually didn't have enough initiative to go change it right away. Most I ever got was a $10 pack of Duracell batteries. Other stores have the same policy- Bruno's in GA had it- got some free pizzas that way smile.gif
