Jan Xbox360 Sales Hit 294 000
Posted by Syrus | February 21 12:51 EST
Today from Reuters
Microsoft Corp. sold 294,000 Xbox 360 video game consoles in January, a company executive said on Tuesday, citing preliminary research data.
That is nearly 18 percent higher than the 250,000 units sold in the same month a year earlier, according to Molly O'Donnell, group manager for Microsoft's entertainment and devices division that oversees the Xbox 360.
O'Donnell was citing preliminary figures from market research firm NPD, which could not immediately be reached for comment.
"Xbox 360 had a fantastic January, and we feel great about our position in the marketplace," O'Donnell said.
Microsoft's Xbox 360 competes with the PlayStation 3 from Sony Corp. and the Wii from Nintendo Co. Ltd.
Interesting...
On one hand January of last year the console was still sold out anywhere... so the sales numbers were limited by how many they could produce.
On the other hand, now that production is better they're still selling as many (in fact better) then they did when the console was in high demand from the launch rush...

Nintendo's Wii took the top spot in U.S. sales for the month of January with 436,000 units sold. Microsoft's Xbox 360 came in second with 294,000 units sold, while Sony's PlayStation 3 took a close third after selling 244,000 units in the first month of the new year.

Looking good for the 360 since demand doesn't seem to have dropped even after 1 year, no official price drop and the release of the PS3 .
Actually, this is a horrible result for the Xbox 360. Last year at this time the console was supply constrained, and so demand was much higher than the 250,000 units sold.
This year, both Wii and PS3 are still 'relatively' supply constrained, but it would seem that demand for both is higher than the 360, which is the only console that is fully stocked across the supply chain.
If these were the only factors, they would actually be disastrous for the Xbox 360. But Halo 3 looms large, and it should tip the scales back in favor of the Xbox 360.
I don't like the idea of the beta being available for only a limited time, and only to a limited number of people though. Even a beta of Halo 3 will sell systems. What MS should do is after the current limited beta, they should OPEN it to ALL Xbox Live Gold subscribers. It will keep unit sales steady until the product ships in November, and just as it sold copies of Crackdown, it will sell subscriptions to Xbox Live.
In the face of two competitors which offer (admittedly inferior) free online components, what better way to hammer home the value of paying for Xbox Live, than offering the perk of playing Halo 3 before it hits the shelves? The current alternative, is to tease your loyal customers with the game that they have been waiting years for, and then taking it away before giving them the retail product? How does that help sell systems?

From what I've been reading (I don't live in the US so have no way to see for myself) there are plenty of PS3's in stock and getting hold of one is very easy?.

Oh yer, I forgot the PS3 hasn't launched here yet hopefully there will be more interesting figures when it is release here.

What does this say about the theory that MS dumped millions of consoles onto the market in December to make the 10 million mark? If the market is flooded with x360's then how did they still get a decent shipment figures for January?

Unlike last year no sales are carrying over from December for the 360. Everyone who wanted to get a 360 for Christmas could get one. All sales for January are from brand new interest. This is a strong result.
Sales for the PS3 have carried over from December shortages. The PS3 January supply constraints were very minimal for January. Everyone who wanted a PS3 in January could get one. Considering the PS3 hasn't even sold it's first million shipped consoles it's a very disappointing result for Sony.
Wii is just kicking ass at the moment.

This is quoted so often, and yet it couldn't be further from the truth. Just because more and more stores have them in stock doesn't mean that they aren't supply constrained.
Until every store, everywhere has full stock, all the time, then there is still a supply constraint. The Xbox 360 is fully stocked. The PS3 is probably at about 30%. The Wii, maybe 5-10%?
Admittedly, the PS3 appears to be underperforming, but that sort of proves why the numbers for the Xbox 360 are so alarming. Consoles grow exponentially year after year. MS cannot survive with such poor year over year sales improvements. The fact that the PS3 is so underwhelming, and yet the demand is roughly equal to the Xbox 360 is extremely alarming. The Xbox 360 is at a substantially lower price point, and it has a vast library of solid titles. There is nothing appealing about the PS3, and yet it is still moving similar number to the Xbox 360.
Make no mistake, Halo 3 is absolutely critical to the Xbox 360's success. It's the single reason why I feel that MS will outsell the PS3 and even the Wii this Christmas.

It sure is. I own one, and anyone who owns one will tell you that it really will never be in competition with either the Xbox 360 or the PS3. It's more of a toy. It's a very fun toy, but it's already showing it's limitations now. The controller is great for party games, but it's frankly annoying to have to aim this thing at the screen all the time. They really, really need to offer a standard controller that works with Wii games in order to give the system a shot at being anything more than a niche system. Otherwise, it will always be the fun little system with games like Wii Play and Wario Ware Smooth Moves.
(The Wii is the very first system I actually had to LOWER the resolution from 480p to 480i, because the graphics at 480p were just plain terrible.)

I said supply constraints were minimal, not non existent.

Considering MS has yet to price cut the 360 in the US it's figures are quite impressive. I'm sure a price cut of $50 to $100 could of generated an extra 100k of sales.

Last gen biggest franchise GTA is going to move consoles as well. If MS has the cheaper product with a stronger catalog when GTA4 is released it's going to benefit a lot more then the PS3.

I agree and I'm happy to see Nintendo will do well this generation regardless of what MS or Sony offer. Hopefully the software situation will improve.

How are your figures any more reliable then anyone else's? 30%... really? where'd you find that figure?
While I can't speak for everyone I can tell you with great certainty that there are exactly 16 stores within a 30 mile radius of my house, and starting the Week of December 18th all 16 of them had PS3s in stock and AFAIK none of them have been out of stock since.
I haven't heard of a single person in the US who couldn't find a PS3 if they wanted one.
You would think that if they were difficult to find, whenever the topic pops up you'd see people saying "hey, there aren't any near me, you mind helping me out?", not even ONCE have I seen that.

for a console that is still priced for the "hardcore" market, these are great figures. until the prices get to the sub-$300 marker, we wont be seeing any really high sales for either console.
there really is no excuse for the ps3. i dont remember the last time a high profile console was this easy to find BEFORE christmas. when it's 3 weeks before christmas and your best buy has over 20 units just collecting dust during your launch holiday season, that speaks volumes about the demand for your product. i think the stock % for the ps3 is higher then 58%, i really dont know anyone who has had any problem finding one, these are people i know in person, internet, LIVE, etc. im not saying that the ps3 is dead, but it does have an uphill battle to fight.
as for the Wii, awesome news IMHO. it's not surprising but that doesnt change anything. i think it's great that nintendo is back in full force, i give them credit for having the balls to try something new.

A friend of mine was at a best buy mid december and happened to see a few ps3s...He bought one thinking he could sell it on ebay and make a profit - after searching ebay for completed items, he probably would have LOST money selling it due to sales tax he paid...That doesnt say much, especially in the month of december when video games sales are typically higher.
Just the simple fact that the 360 continues to sell at the same volume (even higher!) speaks loud and clear they continue to dominate the market. I think this trend will continue until the PS3 comes down in price, or has more franchise, top - tier games.
Take me as a prime example. I have a ps2 and an xbox. I am finally getting around to selling my old xbox to a coworker and am going to buy a 360....why? because look at the great games I can get into now...GRAW, R6, COD3, GoW, you name it. PS2 will finally go to ebay where I should have dumped it months ago...
