Five Developers Microsoft Must Buy... Before EA Does
Posted by XanTium | February 24 22:59 EST

From teamxbox.com:
[QUOTE]
Ensemble Studios. FASA Interactive. Bungie. Rare. LionHead. One thing that console manufacturers are forced to do is acquire independent game developers that will create the first-party titles every console needs at launch and throughout its lifespan.
Although a console can't succeed without third party support, first and second party titles are the games that truly differentiate a console from its competitors.

That's why the continuous acquisition of independent developers is crucial to a console success. The following are the five independent developers I believe Microsoft should buy before some other big publisher like EA or Activision acquires them.

#5 - Real Time Worlds
#4 - Gearbox Software
#3 - Crytek
#2 - Valve Software
#1 - Epic Games

Runner Ups: Starbreeze , id Software, Bizarre Creations, Nerve Software, From Software.

I haven't read the article yet but I can't believe Capcom didn't make the list or the runner-ups.

i would really like to know what valve and id are doing there. they are both 90% pc developers, and the games they have made for xbox/360 are awful. seeing how they are pc devs, theres absolutely no reason to be afraid of sony or nintendo or mac buying them. id also only makes a new game every like 2-3 years (currently the quake series)

Why dont microsoft just buy EA lol..

Besides, i dont agree with this article, and the whole console success based on aqcuisition of these companies.

A good console built around a solid platform will succeed no matter what, and i think microsoft already own enough of every market it is in, im suprised they havent purchased the actual planet yet.

Furthemore, These companies have their own identities, that will be lost if they were taken over.

Microsoft should be able to achieve success without this, if they are confident enough of the 360. Buying every company in sight and pouring money into the 360 would be a sign of desperation to me.

Whats Crucial to a consoles success is addressing consumer needs, producing consoles that dont die after a few months, and having something unique and exciting for gamers. Also churning out poor quality games, and pc ports doesnt help either. Its a next gen console, but there are only a handful of next gen games if you ask me. The rest are same old, same old. sleeping.gif

Just my opinion. Please Dont flame me smile.gif

Lol, no flames necessary. I think you make very good points.

I don't think the biggest part of owning these companies is getting them to make games for you, it's that if you let your competitor get them, your competitor will keep them from making any games for you at all (or make you actually pay your competitor for the license to use their product). Plus, it keeps them from making other games for your opponent.

I'll agree with the first two. Doesn't Microsoft own Capcom now?

Valve's not stupid, they're not going to let EA or Microsoft buy them. It would be especially dangerous to put Steam in the hands of either company, not to mention Valve is doing exactly they should be doing as a company and for all we know making a lot more than others are too. They're not only about games, they could drop EA entirely and go completely online for sales if they really wanted. All EA is doing is publishing the boxes of the games, Valve learned from Vivendi not to get too close with anything else.

Personally I'd put id software in the top 3 MS should acquire.

Sure many people think id only makes played-out fps titles now-a-days but many people like myself still love the hell out of all their newest titles.

You could also make the argument that why should MS bother when the 360 is clearly the console for fps titles anyway but on the other hand id software would be a great acqusition by MS for their pc support no doubt!

So all around I think id software would be a hell of a buy for MS and much more realistic than Valve. Valve wouldn't sell out unless you threw an unrealistic amount of money at them and quite frankly I can't blame them. Gabe Newell left MS to start Valve anyway so he obviously has little love for them as it is. That and 1,000+ other reasons.

Anyone else agree that id software would be a great acquisition?

As much as I hate EA, it seems like it would make good business sense to have Microsoft's games division have a merger or flatout buy EA. That's it. Game over. Microsoft wins.

I hate EA, they are robbing 360 owners by selling cheat-codes and leaving out game content to sell later as micro transactions.

I'll never buy an EA game ever again, frig them. Their pathetic slow servers are another reason not to buy EA, it should of never of been allowed to let EA have their own servers.
