You only need a passthru if you are using a slot-2 device.

If you don't have a slot-2 card already then get a slot-1 device like an R4 or 'M3 Simply'. They both support moonshell*, a few emulators and Micro-SD.

If you already have a slot-2. You can use them as passthru devices if you want. Including the Micro-SD, they are only about $30 more than a passthru card.

*Moonshell, is a homebrew multimedia player. It plays DPG movies and MP3s as well as some other audio formats.

At least 98% of DS games can be played on a Slot-1 cartridge.

To back them up yourself, you need an expensive device (linker) like a Neoflash

I have not had a chance to use either personally. But, I have read that the R4 and M3 Simply are made in the same exact plant. The M3 Simply is a little more expensive, so go with the R4.

Try real hard to get a Micros SD made in Japan for whichever one you get though.

Right now, the supply of M3 simply is very tight and you won't find it in stock at most places. So I would recommend getting an R4. They work well they update their firmware regularly.

So which would be better overall for playing back-ups and NES/SNES roms?

SuperCard LITE Micro SD or the R4?

I am in the same boat. I've had an xbox1 modded for a long time now and just got a NDS lite. I was looking at the various options for homebrew, music etc..., and from what I gather the DS-Xtreme, looks to be the best cart out there, and the M3 simply, and R4, are the other top options.

With the DS-Xtreme I don't like the fact that you are limited on size, and if you want the bigger size (which you do because Nintendo just upped the size limit on games) you have to pay twice as much as the M3 Simply or R4.

With the M3 and R4 I am worried about wifi play (I've heard Mario Kart doesn't play well w/ wifi). I am not to concerned about the Download Play feature, but I definitely want wifi play.

Today the CycloDS Evolution was announced and it looks to be promising.

So basically I'm looking for input from everybody. Has anyone had problems with wifi play on any cart, what cart would you recommend, etc.?
