Lewis: Downloads do not detract from retail
Posted by XanTium | March 15 14:44 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From mcvuk.com:
[QUOTE]
Euro Xbox boss Chris Lewis says that digital downloads and boxed retail can live together.
The upcoming Xbox 360 download of Elder Scrolls IV expansion Shivering Isles looks set to take Xbox Live closer to delivering full priced product - but European Xbox boss Chris Lewis has insisted that Microsoft isn't encroaching on retail's stomping ground.

And whilst this is effectively cutting retail out of the loop, Lewis denies that it poses any danger to the High Street.
"There is a parallel opportunity through Live to offer demos, new levels, maps, characters etc," Lewis told MCV. "But these complement the retail full priced product completely and are not designed to detract but more to enhance."

Just as long as major releases such as the Oblivion expansion are released on a retail side, then I will be okay with it. For those of us without the means of downloading additional content, it will really piss me off to not have the opportunity to get it.

exactly...it's only a matter of time before the full product will be released online and then the slow phase-out of the dependence on retail outlets will occur until most of the sales are online...

i just hope that the model of a one-time purchase for complete ownership of a game does not give way to some monthly-fee to play the game...software platforms like MS Office have been discussing this for years...

considering the size of what will probably come out this kind of sucks for some people. personally i have a 12Mb/s down cable connection, but if i had only 1Mb/s, i would be pissed waiting a day to d/l this stuff, plus the fact that on relase date their servers probably will be overwhelmed so you will be able to pay, but not get a decent speed to get your stuff. i think will keep retailers good for some time, at least in the us, but in a place like south korea where they have so much fast internet i can see a problem.

just like on the pc side when ea/dice said the expansion packs for bf2 - euro and the other one, were going to be d/l only, then i see them in a retail store....they need to step outside their multi-million $$$ offices that have multiple t3 or whatever they have now going in and live in reailty where 4Mb/s is "really fast"
