Microsoft to Support Blu-ray Eventually - But not allowed to say so
Posted by XanTium | March 23 14:02 EST | News Category: Xbox360

Speaking to the BBC, Xbox UK head Neil Thompson is quoted as saying:
"Whatever format wins it is highly likely we will offer a solution. The only debate is if you want to watch Blu-ray movies and pay the extra money for that feature. We prefer to offer the consumer choice."
But Microsoft's PR people, were quickly seeking to set the record straight and send this to spong.com:
The article implies that Neil is suggesting that Microsoft is going to support Blu-Ray. To confirm, this quote has been taken out of context and is not what Neil was implying. Microsoft offers, and fully supports, the HD-DVD format and offers consumers the choice of getting their HD movie content either via the optional HD-DVD player or via Xbox Live Video Marketplace (US only).
Note: Microsoft officially supports the HD-DVD format atm so Toshiba probably doesn't like it when they say they would eventually support the Blu-ray format. But it's pretty obvious that if the HD-DVD format dies, Microsoft will support Blu-ray.

Microsoft said this over a year ago. If BluRay wins the format war, they'll give the consumer the choice and offer a BR addon. What's so hard to understand?

Exactly! And why wouldn't they? What sense would it make if one format died out to just say "oh well"?

So they should. At least if we buy the HD-DVD drive and hook up via VGA we can upscale our DVD collection, so at least it wont be a total brick, and also use it for home made HD movies, then if it dies the 360 will have both a HD-DVD and Blu-Ray drive, now that is choice!

Wait just 1 Second here. They just got busted in a lie the last qoute from Microsoft states that Neil was implying that consumers get the choice of getting their HD movie content either via the optional HD-DVD player or via Xbox Live Video Marketplace (US only).

Why would a "British" guy be implying this on a "British" Tv Station (BBC) when Xbox Live Video Marketplace is US only???????? Even Ms said that! jester.gif jester.gif jester.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

Neil couldnt possibly be implying this on British Tv its a lie. I think MS should get their Lies, I mean Stories
at least thought more out this is Blatant, A dummy can figure that this doesnt make any sense at all!

Of course. I'm sure if HD-DVD becomes the standard then sony will eventually have to release their movies in the formate and probably make HD-DVD players as well.

Considering that the licenses for software players (Windows et al) for Blue-Ray and HD-DVD discs will possibly be pulled (considering the current security breaches and no possible workaround) I would say that they must be talking about Xbox 360 type applications?

I would prefere XBOX to offer a more open approach, just by a 360 Blu-Ray drive add-on, cheap and effective.... i guess. Means they aren't pinned down
