More Context on Memory Reservation on Xbox360 and PS3
Posted by XanTium | March 26 23:53 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From Microsoft's Andre Vrignaud's Blog:
[QUOTE]
Xbox 360 reserves 32 MB for the system. The remaining 480 MB (94%) is completely available for games to use how they wish. The 32MB of system memory is used for the kernel, device drivers and the Xbox 360 Guide, which includes friends lists, voice/text messages, achievement lists, gamercards, Live Marketplace, 1-1 chat, virtual keyboard, and the music player. For CPU reservation, core 0 is completely available to the game, and the system reserves a small percentage (think single digits) of core 1 and 2.

For comparison, PS3 developers have to deal with a system that has memory split into two 256MB banks, one of which is reserved for graphics only. A large portion of both the memory banks are reserved for the system. On top of that, games that want to support other features, like friends lists or in-game commerce, take an additional memory hit. Arstechnica.com indicates that a total of 96MB is reserved for the system on PS3. Innerbits.com indicates that 9MB is required for friends lists (and 60MB for in-game commerce!). If those numbers are correct, a PS3 title using friends lists functionality has 512-96-9 = 407MB available, 73MB less than an Xbox 360 title using the same features.

Wow, you posted part of some microsoft guy's blog which makes references to a year old article that tries to guess what features the ps3 will have and how much memory they will use. Good job, xbox-scene.

Dude,NONE! weren't you paying attention. These are both multi-threaded systems. These tasks are to be run in the backgorund at all times and all that memory is not available to devs at all. It must only be used for their respective dash. So technically the 360 has more memory to work with and the ps3 is an even bigger pain thanks to the fact that its not shared memory. Also lets not forget the 10mb eDRAM on the 360 thats reserved for hi def visuals only. This is separate from the 512 system ram. Ps3 has no such solution giving it alot of bandwidth issues for hi def visuals.

Can somebody answer a few question for me? Does anyone know if the PS3 has voice chat? If you take away voice chat from my 360 gaming experience, it would suck. How do you get, meet, or add friends on the PS3? Do you even get friends? I know these aren't the most important factors in gaming, but these days online is where it's at.

This may be so,but when your loading up Graw2 and try to open the guide it gets so boged down that the game take much longer to load and the guide can take up to a min to show up.ive seen this happen with other games, but graw2 is the worse.ive even had it lock up the game b4(most likely a glitch in the game for this one).

MS should of put a gig in the 360, its not like it would of cost them much more to include it.

Yea 1 gig would be nice. But they new their nice new box would be hacked in time. And hell, if the 360 had 1 gig I would rather buy another 360 and use it as a linux PC instead of getting a new PC (as well as many other modders).
