Confirmed: Wistron will Stop Producing Xbox 360s
Posted by XanTium | March 27 18:05 EST | News Category: Xbox360
Yesterday's story is now confirmed, Wistron will stop manufacturing the Xbox360. From next-gen.biz:
In a prepared statement, Microsoft said that its contract with Taiwan-based Wistron would "voluntarily expire" on July 1 this year. Production volumes will be transferred to Microsoft's remaining two manufacturers, Celestica and Flextronics.
"These types of adjustments are considered a common business practice within the consumer electronics industry and should not reflect on the relationship between Microsoft and Wistron," the statement continued. "Also, this does not affect our guidance which still implies we expect to sell about 12 million Xbox 360 consoles by end of June 2007."
How many of the Red Ring O' Death 360 units were made in the Wistron factory? Is it a particular site that is the problem, or simply the CPU's BGA connection is a new and finicky design (in general).
Microsoft is obviously meeting demand, perhaps Wistron is simply the most expensive factory of the three so they don't get a contract renewal.
Insider details would be interesting, but there's really nothing in the press release.

I'm actually more scared about units coming from Celestica & Flextronics. I deal with both of those companies on a daily basis... so I know exactly how bad they are.
