More about Xbox 360 Elite: no 65nm, DVD drive, IPTV
Posted by XanTium | March 28 00:58 EST | News Category: Xbox360

Gizmondo posted an interview with Albert Penello (Director of Global Marketing for Microsoft's Xbox 360) with more details about the Xbox 360 Elite:
[QUOTE]
* Gizmodo: Will there be a new processor inside the Xbox 360 Elite, perhaps one using a cooler-running, 65nm process?
* Penello: It's interesting. There's been a lot of questions about that, and the answer is, the insides of the boxes change all the time. There's nothing specific going on with Elite regarding anything like that. We make changes to the boxes all the time, just as part of cost reductions and continuous improvement, so no, there's nothing really interesting to talk about there.

* Gizmodo: There was talk about how the processor was going to be cooler-running and perhaps quieter.
* Penello: No. we haven't announced anything like that.

* Gizmodo: You can't give us any sort of information about the future of the processor and how that might be upgraded?
* Penello: Again, the thing about that is, it's not going to really be particularly newsworthy. Components have changed since we launched it and will continue to change. There's no upgrade of the processor. We might be doing cost reductions and things like that, but it's nothing that the consumers will ever notice.

* Gizmodo: You did change the DVD drive, didn't you, so that it's quieter?
* Penello: What's interesting is, that was a rumor that was going around that's also interesting in its propagation, but the reality is, we have several different manufacturers of DVD drives, and people claim that they believe that they've heard ones that are quieter, which is interesting, because I don't really know anything about that.

* Gizmodo: So one week you might have one in there, and then another week you might have another, depending on availability?
* Penello: We have a lot of different components in the box. There are 1500 different components in the box. I'm really not trying to be flippant, because a lot of the sites are sort of claiming that there is these specific components that are going to do specific things, and the truth is, there are infinite numbers of combinations of the console in terms of components and who they're manufactured by.

thats a shame about the chips.

what i really want to know is, will there be versions of the elite with the new chips, thats when i would like to buy one, id like to get the most out of my elite, rather than buy 2, cos that would mean i would have to wait even longer to get my ps3 laugh.gif

Its interesting what the interview says about DVD drives. Maybe that means that those of us who buy this won't get stuck with the currently unmoddable BenQ drive.

he doesn't want people to not buy the elite in fear of an update so he makes it sound like 65 nm chips are insignificant when in theory they could be 30% more efficient/cooler

I feel sorry to hear about anyone who is actually happy about this... I mean we are the ones who went throught multiple 360s with hardware issues and then MS turns around and SH**s on our faces

Please excuse my dumbness. I just found this tutorial, Xtreme Firmware Install Guide rolleyes.gif I guess it's only a matter of being able to extract the firmware key from the Elite model.

So...a 100+ jump for hdmi, IPTV, and a bigger HD. I'd say the bigger hd might be useful but I don't keep demos nor buy downloadable videos, if you can't pull those off the HD to your computer then it'll fill up mighty fast. hdmi might be relevant if HD-DVD wins the format war(not looking good) even then you can get a cheap HDMI(hdcp compliant) card and hook the HD-DVD drive to your computer. IPTV, don't know nor really care what that is, I've got cable and that works fine, I'll switch when I see a provider offer a sizeable discount on the Basic 99 channels.

Maybe they've traced the bad solder installations to that factory they stopped using, Wintron. It woudl be even better if they didn't use that crappy RoHS compliant solder or at least they should spend for some quality material and process management.

I wouldn't expect the DVD drive to not have adapted to the backup hack.

I'm so glad I haven't bought a 360 yet. I was waiting until April 13th, but then this was announced for the 29th. Booyakasha.

That guy is paid to say something, but at the same time absolutely NOTHING. I WANT THAT JOB LOL.

Anyways, ya these guys are the masters of marketing. They sell a core (no hard drive), then a "premium" (hard drive), now an "Elite" (120GB hard drive, HDMI).

Makes the premium look like a core now but they gots they monies LOL. Geniuses.

And ya, a lot of people like grimd will buy these like little debbies.

I'll be buying a second premium when the price drops. wink.gif

^kjmc, im with you bud smile.gif

Except that it looks like the mobo is the problem and not cold solder. Read in the hardware section because some serious light is being shed on the problem. Needless to say if I get one red light i'll be bolting down my mobo and throwing the X-clamps in the trash.

yep i want his job too, pointless interviews where you just sit there and pretend to know nothing about your own product

i dont see how this is a denial of 65nm cpu's, quieter drives and the improved scaler chip (from the xephyr prototype shots), he's just refusing to be pinned down because they're worried current 360 owners will feel disgruntled (as if they aren't already), here's an idea microsoft try being honest rather than just pretending not to know anything. us regular early adopters knew this would happen anyway its half the fun of being an early adopter.

i'll be getting one, if we even see the black version this side of the pond, grim have you seen anything at all about a uk release
