The 360 X.org driver and a new liveCD as been released on the free60 sourceforge project page.
This new liveCD have now a full desktop, a powerpc64 toolchain environment and should work great for a liveCD. Unfortunately, support for Samsung drives and sound drivers are still missing.

Please report any problem/bug you may found !

You will find the download link on the free60 wiki located at http://www.free60.org/

CODE

gentoo-livecd-xenon-beta
************************

This is a liveCD for Linux on the Xbox 360. It is based on the experimental
gentoo liveCD that can be found here :
http://gentoo.mirrors.pair.com/experimental/ppc64/livecd/
It has a few changes to boot on the Xbox 360 (codename xenon).
Currently, Samsung drives aren't supported, there is no sound driver,
and you should use vga output for better results.

This liveCD is build with the new xenosfb driver so it have a full
gnome desktop. It also contains the powerpc64 toolchain for
developers.

How does it work ?
==================
Burn gentoo-livecd-xenon-beta.iso.
Upload the cdreader binary via serial, or use the new king kong patcher
with built-in readcd code, this will open the dvd tray.
Put the gentoo-livecd-xenon-beta CD in the drive.
cdreader will automatically start the xell bootloader located at lba 0x20 on
this cd and boot the Linux Kernel.

Where to find more info on Linux for Xbox 360 :
===============================================
http://www.free60.org/
Free60 is a project towards porting GNU/Linux, BSD, Darwin and related
open-source operating systems to the Microsoft Xbox 360 video game console.

Thanks to :
===========
- Felix alias tmbinc, coded the cdreader binary and xell bootloader, without
  him, nothing would be possible.
- Stonersmurf, did the ISO mastering and gave his help and support on a lot of
  things, many thanks to him.
- The free60.org team.

Cheers,
Cpasjuste.

Question for you Cpas....

I have kernel 4532.
Patched the KK iso with the new readcd code.
Load up the game, press start, screen goes black and tray ejects.
I insert this new Gentoo Livecd, close the tray either by pushing it shut or the eject button.
Nothing happens. It just sits on a black screen, I hear the disc spin up once and thats it.
I have tried this gentoo on both a cd and a dvd.

One other bit of info. I realise this doesnt work with samsung drives, this box has a hitachi 46dg.
However it was originally a samsung ms28, so the hitachi that is in there has the firmware spoofed to report as an ms28 otherwise it throws an e66 error code.

My question is, is the reason this isnt working due to poor media, a fault in the .iso, because of the crossflashed drive, or am I just plain old missing something here?

I was in the same boat as you earlier, I had a samsung ms25 originally and swapped it out for a hitach 59 drive. What worked for me was just burning the gentoo disc at a slower speed (2-2.4x) and it booted right away (used a CD-R). Hope that helps.

*edit* just had to change the keyboard model and layout to english(us), it was set to a non-north american one by default

Note: Like with all homebrew/linux stuff on Xbox360 atm you'll need Xbox360 kernel 4532/4548, a burned King Kong Xbox360 game with patched shaders and a Xbox360 DVD-ROM drive (Hitachi-LG only for the LiveCD if you use Xorloser's new 'no-serial-cable' shaders) with modified firmware.

So those who are using serial cables are able to boot the cd with samsung drives?

You're kidding right? Now people can legally develop for the 360 console and now we have access to the countless games, applications, emulators that are already available with linux... now to get ubuntu on there.

What is the point of a negative comment like this? What have you done to improve the Xbox 360 Scene in anyway? I bet once the minds behind this crack the 360 and we can emulate N64 and playstation at full speed you'll want a slice of the cake. This is a very huge leap for 360 homebrew so instead of flaunting your ignorance to everyone that doesn't care, try shutting up.

Anyone with half an interest in the advance of 360 homebrew is interested in this!

Good work guys keep it up jester.gif

Did you read the requirements to actually get it done? Plus you can never use Live again on the xbox plus it's far from legal. Most people don't have that specific firmware anymore so right now it's better to use a PC than to go through all the trouble to do this.

yup it's easier on the pc to install a linux distro and for you FYI you can use your mouse and keyboard without having to get extra adapters or what not ... also you can install multiple OS's in a pc at the same time this is called multiboot or multiosinstalledatthesametime ... jester.gif

At the moment.. just give it time.. now they have access to the machine, they can work out ways around these issues.. Then you will want a slice of the cake.. These things take one step at a time.
