Hard Drive Price is Fair Says Microsoft
Posted by XanTium | April 4 15:30 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From next-gen.biz:
Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg has been defending the price of its $180 120 Gig hard drive for Xbox 360, from consumer criticism that it is too expensive.

Speaking to weekly podcast Game Theory he said, "We know it is expensive and we have definitely heard that feedback but it is a little apples and oranges to compare it to internal PC hard drives because those are off the shelf drives that you have to install yourself. You have to format those and figure out how you are going to move your content over. There is a lot of work there for your average consumer it is not a plug in and play experience for them."

"What we have done is release a smaller laptop size drive. If you compare what we are offering with a real plug-and-play drive the closest thing would be to take a 120 gig self-powered external PC drive and in that case we are seeing those retail at anywhere from $160 to $200 for comparable laptop sized external hard drives."
Anyway, for those who don't want to pay Microsoft's 'premium' price will probably be able to install their own 120gb Western Digital SATA BEVS HDD using TheSpecialists HDDHackr(info) tool with the 'sector 16' taken from an original 120GB Xbox360 HDD.

Well, the market will decide if the price is fair. If they sell lot's then the price is fair, if not well....

That will be the way it will go. Had to finish it off.

So eh, when they release the 'sector 16' there won't be a reason to get this drive, when you can buy your own.

We should be more thanking M$ for the opertounity to upgrade our own drives.

We still need an original M$ 120 Gb HDD to take the said sector from. So if I don't want to pay Microsoft's 'premium' price, who's going to provide me the sector? Those things don't just fall out of the sky ya know, someone has to actually pay for the HDD and share their sector (seriously, who's dumb enough to do that) jester.gif

actually the Western Digital SATA BEVS is an SATA 2.5" drive ... you can just open your HDD case and replace your 20GB drive with your own 120GB drive.

BAH! Fair?! I don't think so...but then again I have no interest in storing hours of HD movie/tv content on a 360.

When the Elite comes to Europe, thats what I'm getting. So I think it is fair, if you consider the price of the 20GB drive.

look at this I fully understand all the bitching now..........

They could have just discontinued the 20GB and used that and sell it at the same price...........

Who says you have to buy their drive??

As soon as the 120 comes out their will be a tool to convert oem sata hard drives into 360 drives.

You can already do it and make a 20 gig as soon as the 120 is released they just have to redump the data off the drive.

So, to make everything easy and without ridiculous wiring and soldering you just swap out the 20 gig drive in its shell for a 120 gig prepped on your pc.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...;ATT=22-136-072

That is the drive to go for. 80 bucks.

O RLY? That's funny because I just went on Best Buy's website and the most expensive 120gb external hard drive they had was 129.99. Idiots. Like others have said, I'll just be buying my own HD and using the "tricks" described above. It's just so, so endlessly frustrating when companies cater to the idiotic consumers and not the ones who actually research and know what's going on. 180 bucks for an 120gb hard drive is an insult, pure and simple.
