HD-DVD Winning the European Race
Posted by XanTium | April 10 18:49 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From next-gen.biz:
[QUOTE]
The Sony backed Blu-ray format has been dealt a blow by the news that a number of independent European studios have decided to release films primarily on Toshiba's HD-DVD format.

Despite trailing Blu-ray sales in Northern America, a Financial Times report claims that HD-DVD appears to be winning the next generation format war in Europe, where 35 films from independent studios such as Studio Canal, Pathe and Filmax have been released on HD-DVD, opposed to just 10 released on Blu-ray.

While admitting that there is a long way to go before a clear victor emerges, Rodolphe Buet, Studio Canal's chief marketing officer, states that the marketing strategies employed by HD-DVD backers were far superior to those of Blu-ray manufacturers.

Studio Canal is independent? Uhmm... It looks quite dependent on Universal... tongue.gif

Also, what does these independent (?) companies mean on the overall European film distribution business? Anyone has any numbers? I would say very little. Maybe they have some interesting position in France but... France = Europe?

Studio Canal has Basic Instinct :-)

HD-DVD has pr0n.

War over :-)

Why is it that Sony produce awesome Consumer Audio products (e.g. Walkman, CD, Discman, SACD, MiniDisc) yet they come up with such sh1te Consumer Video products (e.g. BetaMax, UMD, Blu-Ray)?!

They also love !@#$ing customers up the arse - so I say we should all return the favour on that ground ALONE!

Case in point:

I have bought no less than six MiniDisc devices over the years. Now the very first one was capable of making CD-grade concert recordings (back in 1994), and each model they added 'must have features', however it took until this year - 13 YEARS LATER !@#$ GOD - before they made a model that allowed me to transfer my original recordings from 1994 to my PC via digital interface.

Now it is obvious to any blind fred out there that the reason for this was not a technological one - the technology has always existed. No, instead it is the !@#$s at Sony that 'decided' I couldn't have it. !@#$ the lot of them!

If you hate DRM then by direct implication you hate Sony - as Sony are, and have always been, the inventors and purveyos of the most hated DRM; Root Kit anyone?!

Blu-ray could have your pr0n too, it's just that it can't be produced in any of Sony's blu-ray facilities.

Would be nice to see another Sony format falling by the wayside! The way their quality has dropped over the years (PS disc read errors, PS2 disc read errors, failing laptop batteries, etc.) it's about time they crashed and burned. My MD recorder and 14" trinitron set are still going strong, but I reckon that's because they were made before Sony appeared to sack their quality control staff.

If you want decent AV kit at a Sony price tag, look no further than Panasonic.

As I stated above - each one had new features - and also I really honestly never thought those !@#$s at Sony would ever give me that transfer feature anyway (for the very reasons stated).

So it is kind of a big finger up by Sony to bring out this (I dare say final) MiniDisc device that has the most wanted feature known to man! It's like they know so many people will buy it - yet it also admits that they knew they were screwing is all over for a decade!

A kind of 'we know that they know that we know' type situation... just makes the customer hate them even more; a sick and twisted joke that has been played on the consumers for 13 !@#$ing years!

um... and this was after the ps3 had been out in Europe for how long, 10 days? The blu-ray sales didn't like.. double in USA when the ps3 had been out for about a month?

No I'm not saying HD-dvd is crap ps3ray rules.. just that I'd think twice about declaring HD-dvd the winner of Europe.

Yeah but didn't the ps3 just come out? With these players now available I'd expect to start seeing more BRD movies in Europe.

Pathe is a publisher they just got lucky in getting those movies locked down for a distribution deal in the UK. Pathe didn't produce them and most if not all those movies were done by major studios.
