Microsoft's Greenberg Talks Xbox 360 Messenger Specifics
Posted by XanTium | April 11 11:34 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From gamasutra.com:
[QUOTE]
Microsoft is also working towards its ultimate goal of connecting Xbox Live players to users of Windows Vista and Windows Mobile enabled devices through its recently announced Live Anywhere initiative.
As the latest step towards achieving this goal, Microsoft this week announced plans to bring its Windows Live Messenger to the Xbox 360, as well as debut a mini-keyboard controller attachment for the Xbox 360. Gamasutra spoke with Aaron Greenberg, group product manager for Xbox Live and the Xbox 360 to tease out some specifics on the announcement.

* So how will multi-platform Live messaging actually work?
* Chatting with friends across different platforms is simple and seamless. Just like on your PC today, your friends list will tell you if a person is on a computer or mobile device, and once this service launches it will tell you if your friend is on their Xbox 360.
Chatting with IM on your Xbox 360 will support the ability to have 6 different conversations at one time as well as do group chats with 3 different people in one conversation. So ideally you could be on your console and a friend could be at work on their PC and your girlfriend or wife could be on their cell phone all in the same conversation.
You can either use the guide to manage your chats or take advantage of the chat box overlay that you can have up while you are playing a game, watching a movie or TV show.

* What can you tell us about the add-on peripheral mini-keyboard controller? It looks interesting, but also looks like added weight could be a concern.
* It is actually very light and fits perfectly with the controller. I was playing around with it today and you can hardly notice that it is there. It is designed in a way to still have a comfortable feel so that your gameplay should not be affected. Of course, being able to quickly snap it on and off, similar to the headset, allows our consumers flexibility if they don't want it always connected to their controller.

so i'm hoping you can buy the keyboard plug-in and not the whole controller since they said it can be easily unplugged, wonder how the wired mic is going to work cause the plug on the bottom does not have the 2 little holes for the black inserts on the wired mic . Also curious if it will still be wireless. i hope so don't see why it would not be

thats also looks like a chop or a prototype, found it on some other forum

It just looks to use when your playing a game. What if your having a conversation during a game (can you do that?)? You will have to keep the keypad in at all times and my fingers like to grip the controller not just hold onto the sides. Seems kinda awkward.

i hear ya, i'm a big fan of live messenger, but all my friends use aim also thanks to the aol dial-up days. i have like 7 contacts on msn and the rest aim. But i was thinking, Once linux is up and going mainstream on the 360, this is going to make like so much easier, keyboard for typing, left thumbstick for mouse, "a" "b" for left and right click, might even work well with windows laugh.gif

so what happens about MSN on the pc?

I'd be a bit pissed off if I keep getting the "you have been signed out because you have been signed in at another location" message when I'm piddling about on the pc and someone else is on my 360!!!!!

I just want to know if your gamertag will be your messenger name? Or do I have to go and make a new msn messenger account so I have 2 names to fumble around with?

Like when this upate comes out will I be set to chat or will I have to mess around setting up a new account?

Well Since all of us have .Net Passport's, we already have Messenger accounts so your user name will be name@hotmail.com, name@msn.com but your nick name will be your gamer tag on your 360 like you have to set a nick name on your PC (like mine is just Neo)

most people who have an MSN account or Hotmail account signed up for xbox live through that account.

Like myself i use a *@hotmail.com account with all my contacts on msn and login to live with it aswell.

Unless you created a seperate account for live, this should be no concern then.

Well if you read the offical release on xbox.com it says (and im gona copy and past this)

Integrated support for the new Xbox 360 text input device. Note that this device includes a new wired headset.

This is on the new Dash Board page on xbox.com
