Xbox 360 titles given next-gen barcodes
Posted by XanTium | April 19 10:32 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From mcvuk.com:
[QUOTE]
Microsoft is to introduce a new barcode onto Xbox 360 games this year, which can hold double the amount of data than the commonplace black and white stripes.

Microsoft engineering director Gavin Jancke, who developed the new High Capacity Color Barcode (HCCB), said the aim was not to replace the current barcode system, reports the BBC.
"It's more of a 'partner' barcode," he said. "The UPC barcodes will always be there. Ours is more of a niche barcode where you want to put a lot of information in a small space."
Because the barcode can be read by mobile phone cameras, Microsoft claims that it can be used to go online.

So what does this mean? We have to scan the barcode with our mobile phone if we want to play the game on live?

"Once scanned by a mobile, consumers could be taken to a website containing downloads or extra content"

That sounds weird, when I first read it I was like, how is a barcode going to go online?

Sounded to me like you'd be able to take a pic of the bar code, go to a website and give the website your pic you took, and then it could then give you links to web pages or extra downloadable content from the next gen barcode.

Here is my take on it. I'm not sure if it is true or just something that they might be thinking of doing.....

You know how phones can go on the internet now, but who wants to type in a big URL.
I wondering if these barcodes can just be scanned by your phone and it would go the the address about the info.
So you could go into a store (lets say walmart) and find a TV. you could scan it and it bring up on the phone more info about it, like screen-res, refresh rate, contrast ratio..... All within a little barcode.
Or maybe little scanners in the store.

Like I said I donno, just thats my ideas

No I dont think so, only that this article is a complete and utter waste of webspace. 'Barcodes' that hold much more information than just black & white bars are already used for years and years. See for example the 'barcodes' on Maxtor HD's, they all have a dotted rectangle containing (presumably) the type, size, manufacturing date etc. etc.

I have no idea why this is considered newsworthy...

there's already software for mobile phones to allow you to take pic of barcodes and the software can somehow scan the barcode info from just a picture. that idea is nothing new... the idea of adding extra content in barcodes just for fun is...

this cant hurt anyone... or change anything. i'll welcome it.
