OpenBSD Port for Xbox1 in Progress
Posted by XanTium | April 21 21:53 EST | News Category: Xbox

From Markus R. on the Xbox Linux Mailing list:
[QUOTE]
I just wanted to tell everybody that I am working on a OpenBSD port to the Xbox.

The current status is: Memory management and framebuffer driver are working.
Next thing to do: Integrate the framebuffer driver in a wsdisplay and mount the root fs.

If anybody knows OpenBSD kernel internals, please email me (there is few documentation available and I don't know lots of OpenBSD developers).
If anybody wants to help me, you're welcome.

For example me, I also use XBMC with it and all these wonderful emulators. All these emulators and other homebrew developments where the reason why I did buy an Xbox in the first place and as long as there is nothing like that on an Xbox 360 I am not really interested in that one as the "normal" games are for me not that interesting.
I also like using Linux on my Xbox (used GentooX a lot and xDSL for Mugen) and OpenBSD would be interesting to see on the Xbox.

I, for one am still interested in the old box.
simply because the XNA development kit is obviously limited in it's capabilities, because I still like to play on it, because I like watching movies on XBMC and cuz the 360 is having too many issues at the moment, I'd wait for the elite and Halo 3

nobody forbids YOU to learn C++, learn the Xbox's modified C++, grab the source files of Firefox and try to start porting it.
we've got linksboks, it doesn't support javascript, but at least it's something.

BTW: I hope openBSD will not have overscan issues like Xbox Linux smile.gif

Nice, I've used FreeBSD before but not OpenBSD, I'm guessing it's similar?

Me, and two of my friends (three, if you count one who still uses his XBox (and MAME-OX (or whatever version he has), ZSNESX and others) but also owns a 360) for a start. No other console allows you access to so many great emulators, a media player like XBMC, great ports of great PC games like XDuke, XShadow and DoomX, and the ability to mod some games (not many, but Morrowind and GTA3 amongst others are supported).

Even if I did buy a 360 (which I probably will, as the PS3 and the Wii don't seem to be offering the games I want), then I still won't pack away my original XBox until the 360 can do everything that I use the XBox for, such as emulators, XBMC, my favourite XBox native games, etc.

I just wish someone would produce a version of Linux for the XBox that was geared towards running WINE and Windows/DOS games. That would be a very worthwhile addition to the XBox smile.gif

I think the thing that many people still don't realize about emulation on the Xbox, is the ridiculous amount of memory and CPU power that it requires. Emulating a system nicely requires the host system to be around three time as powerful, in all aspects. That's why it's easy for the Xbox1 to emulate SNES, NES, TurboGFX, Amiga, Atari, PSX, etc. Ever wondered why there's no Gamecube, PS2, PSP, etc., emulators for Xbox? Because those consoles have power that is closer to the Xbox1. Just using those as examples. Now, take for instance, running a copy of Linux on your Xbox. Using a nice GUI, it'll suck up all your available memory (unless of course, it's modded). So to even run Wine, it would require you to run from a commandline, and then you'd have all the joy of configuring it.

As for running DOS games, just use DOSBox. Or for the few good DOS games that remain, run them natively via ScummVMx. Honestly, I have no need for Windows. I don't really even know why anybody would want to run Windows on an Xbox, besides it being a proof of concept.

And, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't FreeBSD create an official port for the Xbox1 architecture? Due to the many similarities between FreeBSD and OpenBSD, one could look at the details for the FreeBSD release, and take some hints from there.

Count me in as another interested in xbox1. Great emulators, (some even mod up 128mb ram to cover more roms that won't work with out it).
The present and future of the xbox1 is as a media center that includes emulation.

The original Xbox is easily the most moddable and versatile piece of equipment ever made. I own both Xbox consoles, if i had to give one up i'd get rid of the 360 without a shadow of a doubt. I'm going to be using my original Xbox for many years to come, and look forward to each and every update.
