I always find MS revenue & profit numbers interesting, in a strange way. They don't seem to coincide with my view of reality most of the time. I mean, how can they post 'record profits' for Q3 because of 'robust demand for Vista'?? First of all: my impression is *not* that everyone is rushing out to get Vista. Especially businesses still seem to hold off the boat, and these are figures for the *past* quarter. Second: Vista for consumers has not been out for long, so not a lot of people will have bought a boxed retail version yet. Also I don't think boxed retail versions is where MS gets most of their OS profits from. Third: Vista OEM installs should not offset their 'usual OS profits' at all, as all these OEM systems would otherwise have been sold with XP, which has about the same OEM pricing. So where does all the Vista revenue come from then??
Also, I think the statement that the console division made a loss 'because of lower demand for 360 consoles' seems odd. I simply don't believe MS makes a lot of money on each console sold, *if* they even make money on them. So why don't they just say the software attach rate was lower than expected, the XBL purchases where lower then expected, more units broke etc..
Somehow I just don't take a word of all this...
