Xbox 360 not as useful as PS3 for Folding-at-home
Posted by XanTium | May 3 11:54 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From pro-g.co.uk:
[QUOTE]
Vijay Pande, creator of the Folding@home project, which harnesses the power of networked Playstation3s across the world to carry out essential research into Alzheimer's Disease, has revealed to Pro-G that the 360 is of limited help to his work.

After being asked if he thought the power of the 360 could be useful, he said: "Possibly, although the cell processor in the PS3 is much more powerful for our calculations than the CPU in the Xbox 360."
"We are simulating key processes in protein folding and misfolding in Alzheimer's Disease. PS3's are performing aspects of these simulations, and doing so about 20 times faster than a typical PC."

Out of the the 2-3 million PS3s sold only around 30,000 actually used this and it will get less and less as time goes by. Even though it is supposedly a good cause I don't see it becoming popular and who is he to know how powerful a CPU is? Sounds like he got some bread for saying this. I wouldn't put it past Sony.

Well, the PS3 has finally found it's niche... laugh.gif

Ok, I say this in jest... mostly. The PS3's time will come... eventually when the games come.

I wonder if anyone can try it on there Linux 360 right now (thoughs running the hackable kernel), I know it wont be optimized but there would be some interesting benchmarks.

this guy is right, ps3 is better at crunching numbers, but for games general purpose is the better performing option.

It makes me feel good to know that i spent over $600 on a video game system and theres no games to play but i can Fold @ Home better then the 360. Im all for curing diseases but ill do it through donations not game console purchases. Well i guess i did do it through donations (Sony)!

Kudos to PS3 for helping make a difference - but that doesn't mean we 360 owners should be discounted. EVERY little bit of distributed computing helps.

Now -- to get SETI running... rolleyes.gif

exactly! folding@home is what the ps3 is for... not games or anything, thats just what sony tries to tell you, and they talk shit all the time (insert penny arcade comic here).
