Ten lessons the Xbox Team can teach the rest of Microsoft
Posted by XanTium | May 4 12:58 EST | News Category: Xbox360
From zdnet.com:
When it comes to building community -- and profiting from it -- Microsoft's Xbox team is helping write the playbook. That fact isn't lost on the rest of the company. Increasingly, other divisions at Microsoft are studying what the Xbox folks are doing right and trying to apply those lessons to their own products and services.
What are other Xbox learnings that various Microsoft teams -- from Windows, to Office Live, to CRM Live -- are looking to adapt and apply to their divisions? Richards offered up a number of examples:
1. Tiers need to be clear and simple. In Xbox Live, there is gold and there is silver. Fewer, simpler SKUs are better. 2. The dashboard is the UI. Users want access to lots of data, all in one place. They don't want to have to hunt for it. 3. An online marketplace sells content. 4. Arcade: Not everyone is a shooter-game pro. 5. Achievements are a way to stay in touch. 6. Ubiquitous voice and text are de rigeur. 7. Roaming accounts are key. Users want their audio and video content, contact lists, address books, favorites and other settings available on any device, anywhere at any time. 8. Build communities within your community. Gamerzones in the Xbox world allow similar types of users to more easily connect 9. Points are the new online currency. 10. Gamerscore = reputation. Other divisions at Microsoft have been wrestling with how to rank community participants by "reputation" to help users gauge which content/commentary to trust.
Wow, I'd have to say that 5, 7, 8 and 10 are just guesses. Hmm, i guess they wanted some reasons on why they added them. They just can't say "we have it but people don't use them". They'd have to say "we have it because people want them".

... And does gamerscore really equal reputation? I haven't met anybody online that thinks gamerscore means anything.
maybe not reputation but many people use it as a judge of skill.
I can't tell you how often I'm sitting in a lobby and hear someone say "holy shit! twistedsymphony has 35000 points! we're going to get our asses kicked!"
As for me I see gamerscore as more of a guide for how much time people dedicate to gaming. I judge skill by actual achievements.
If I see someone has "seriously" on Gears I know they've played a ton and have a whole lot of experience under their belt. The same can be said for other achievements on other games.

I guess that makes sense. I rarely will go out of my way to get achievements though (play gears of war alot, but not on ranked because i'd rather play with people on my friends list.) So perhaps i'm just a wild card.

I hate people who judge other online by their gamerscore or their ranking
for example, on GRAW2 my ranking is 1. every server i join i cant play because people think "1 is shit so ill kick him"
Now... how do I get my rank higher if i cant play the damned game? tell me?

I'd say the first two are key the rest are kinda whatever. Less SKU's VISTA is officially out to alienate people. Their frontpage replacement (Expressions) itself has 4 SKU's. You simplify Windows because many users are not very good with computers yet you confuse them with multiple SKU's. Even within the Windows Team there are differing opinions.
A Nice UI is also important. I like my OS to run software. That's why I use an OS. The OS is the bridge/platform that the software runs on. It needs to be easy to develop for, simple to navigate, stable and nothing more.

points are the new online currency?
points have to be one of the stupidest things that microsoft has implemented into its variety of products, who the hell wants to purchase something that they have no idea what the worth is? who the hell wants to buy something when you can never fully use all of your points up due to the fact that they don't convert evenly into dollars and cents...points would be acceptable if they awarded points instead of let's say..gamerscore, but otherwise, let's just stick to the dollar or whatever currency for wherever your located

I can see it now
BSOD
*Achievement Unlocked*
XD hahahahaha!
Most of these "10 things blah blah" lists are stupid. And I definitely agree that the whole points thing is complete crap, unless you can win them in the games somehow, why not just make each content pack $5 or whatever instead of "800 MS points." Unless you sit there with a calculator and figure out how much a point is then multiply that by 800 you are just buying something and hoping it isn't enough to put your credit card in the red.
Another good achievement would be the "Windows has recovered from a serious error" message.

Could this possibly be any more retarded? A #1, why in the name of god would the rest of Microsoft (a.k.a. the part of the company that has turned a profit, you know, ever) want to take a page out of the Xbox team's book? They're bleeding cash and always have been. ALWAYS.
Okay, let's see. #1: Xbox team is the first console maker to launch with multiple skus. I guess they're full of shit on number one.
#2: WTF does that even mean? A dashboard can't be complicated? Make the dashboard the UI and all your gui problems are solved forever? I have no idea how this is possibly supposed to mean anything. How is it supposed to apply to the Windows team, let alone the hardware boys or even MS office.
#3: Um . . . okay. While we're at it we might mention that the same applies to an offline marketplace. In fact, I'm pretty sure we could just say, "a marketplace sells content."
#4: Which Microsoft departments give a shit about Microsoft Arcade? Would that be the MS Money crew, or possibly the SQL or .NET guys?
#5: Again, how does this apply to the rest of MS? Maybe your professors or bosses can give you achievements for well-written papers . . .?
#6: I'm not sure that word means what you think it means. De rigeur would tend to suggest that someone other than MS was doing it. Stop being retarded.
#7: This would be kind of nice, but in terms of the PC you'd have to be talking about a roaming My Documents folder to be useful for most people.
#8: Sure, this could work. I won't argue just for the sake of arguing.
#9: Whoever wrote this is seriously fucking retarded. How about this: Currency is the new (and old) online currency. Where the fuck can you even spend gamerpoints online besides the Marketplace?
