I never got a message that said I was banned but can't connect to xbox-live. I let it go through the test connection stuff and fails on the Xbox-live test. When I press the more info button, its blank. It just says xbox-live (error). There is an opportunity to see error codes or something with the Y button but don't think it matters much.

Yes, the error codes do matter. Look at them, and if your Z value is 8015 - 190D then it means you're banned. That fact is plastered all over the main site, the forums, and Microsoft has even confirmed it.
