Lite-On IT Lands OEM Orders for Xbox 360 DVD-Drive
Posted by XanTium | May 30 23:32 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From digitimes.com:
[QUOTE]
Lite-On IT has reportedly secured OEM orders for DVD-ROM drives to be built into Microsoft Xbox 360 consoles, with monthly shipments of 0.8-1 million units to begin in the third quarter of 2007, according to industry sources in Taiwan.

Lite-On IT took over BenQ's optical disc drive business unit in mid-2006 but did not take over the OEM manufacturing rights for Xbox 360 because it was required to obtain new certification from Microsoft, the sources pointed out.
Although Lite-On IT will succeed BenQ as the secondary OEM maker of the built-in DVD-ROM drive, the company stands a chance of displacing TSST to take the primary status.

A million a month? I thought MS only shipped about 7 million consoles in 18 months.

my nuts are squeezing together on this one. Lite On is a great ODD producer and I hope it will be easier for C4E to figure this one out. I wish MS would just bite the bullet and put a blue ray dvd drive into their boxes, but I, as well as everyone else, know that it's not a question of preference, but rather a question of investment.
Microsoft is probably trying to reduce their costs in manufacturing and also increasing the security of their boxes. (Not to mention they can't put in a blue ray dvd drive, but only HD DVD. How weird.)
This also may be MS's time to increase the reliability of the drives, that is to say, they don't like the bad press of all those boxes reporting hardware errors. If that is the case, then good job on their part! IMO MS is still learning how to make a great, stable gaming system and it's important for them to keep updating the technology. As far as the gaming 'hacking' community is concerned, I have no doubt in their ability to circumvent any future security issues, like FW updates.

I think this whole post may be off topic. I'd like to say though: good luck to MS to create a more solid gaming console! Also: good luck to C4eva and company to produce a more solid firmware breakthrough!

P.S.

If MS is ordering lite on drives, will they support HD DVD? or maybe Blue ray? or is it simply an upgraded FW-hacking-defeating drive? This type of speculation is deserving of some skepticism, but I'm kind of new, so bear with me. Thanks!

"my nuts are squeezing together on this one."

How is HD more important than Blue ray? I know the basic differences. Will Blue ray be more influential in future gaming interests? More capacity, compatibilty, etc?

Please open my eyes.

P.S.

I look forward to the days of true HD gaming on a console. I'm talking about 1080p. I know that PC games can be way way way faster and with higher def than a console game, but how soon are we to the next generation of console HD gaming? $600 vs $4000? console vs computer? How much has Sony and MS invested in their current consoles? Are they planning a new event/console? Like: 1080p gaming? I haven't heard of games with more than 720p. I'm probably wrong. Is technology going too fast? Does MS realize the future of HD as a secure entity, that is to say, they will rely on HD until consumers want something better, more powerful? I feel like I'm being obscure, because I like to think in the future. It seems to me that gaming content on the 360 as of late is lacking something. Don't get me wrong, I'm enthralled with a lot of titles out there! Although I feel an overwhelming urge to yell: HEY! Where's the rest??

P.P.S.

I hate posting in the wrong thread, but I feel compelled, in light of this new dvd drive.

P.P.S.

Random thought: Can't wait for GTA4! <salivating>

Don't get your panties in a bunch:

http://www.liteonit.eu/index.php?option=co...&Itemid=116

http://www.emsnow.com/newsarchives/archive...ls.cfm?ID=12848

LiteOn already acquired BenQ's ODD Business last year.

Blu-Ray in a 360? Not gonna happen. That would make the 360 incompatible with HDDVD movies.
Implementing Blu-Ray would require redesigning the 360. With Microsoft yet choosing another "cheap" manufacturer I don't think it's likely that it will happen. Besides Sony and Toshiba are really going head to head with their formats. They wouldn't even allow a hybrid drive.

Although LG has made one...doh:

this is just a dvd drive, as ms has stated, that is all they will put in the 360. the system doesn't need a blueray drive, HD-DVD is just fine, and is optional for the people who want to spend the extra $200 for it. the name change comes from liteon buying out the odd business from benq, as the article states.

Lite-On drives are peices of shit. I own a computer repair business, and see more of this brand fail than anything else.
