Gates Hints At New Xbox Control System
Posted by XanTium | June 4 11:04 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From gamasutra.com:
[QUOTE]
As detailed by technology website All Things Digital, Gates was taking part in a live conversation with Apple founder Steve Jobs, when Gates began to discuss the use of 3D online interfaces and the increasing role of the PC as a home media and communications center.

He ended his comments by saying, "And as we get natural input, that will cause a change... Software is doing vision and so, you know, imagine a game machine where you're just going to pick up the bat and swing it or the tennis racket and swing it."
As the similarities behind his concept and that of the Wii were pointed out, Gates responded: "No, that's not it. You can't pick up your tennis racket. And swing it."
"You can't sit there with your friends and do those natural things. That's a 3D positional device. This is video recognition," he added.

I don't know about all that. That seems like it would be that stupid ball game you get with the vision camera all over again. Video recognition like that is just too complicated, and no one can ever seem to get it right. But kudos to Bill for looking forward, I suppose.

Microsoft are basically copying the Wii. What a crap company. I've totally changed how i think of microsh*te. They've got aids and are a bunch of t**sers.

Did you just call them a bunch of tossers? That's hilarious. It's true they are copying the Wii and it doesn't sound like a good idea. Video Recognition is not advanced enough and probably won't be for a long time. It will be a gimmick.

Also, you've lost the right to be taken seriously.

Microsoft has some pretty amazing tech demos at the Microsoft museum here in Redmond. I certainly don't think that what he's mentioning is something that would be ready for this generation... the vision cam certainly lacks the resolution needed. However, given a few more years development, I can see something like this being a possibility. Let the rumor mill for the 720 begin!

My guess is if you have the vision camera then youl be able to pic up a tennis racket (real one) and swing it and the camera will monitor it's motions replaying it in the game kinda like Wii Sports...my guess.

so what. the only thing that's going to be similar is the concept. I think they're going to all go this way eventually.

I'd love for them to put out something like the wii sports , but with graphics like fight night round 3.

I'd like to see some sort of motion recognition like the same way they capture the movements of the athlete's when they're making the games.

if you've seen the movie "The Island" , there's a scene where they play a fighting game using the same concept but with 3d holographic players. it even has xbox logo's everywhere.

I know we're a few years away from this but I think it'll happen. and with the rate technology is advancing , I think it'll probably be sooner than we think. maybe just not as good as it looks in the movie, though.

I doubt the current vision camera will help at all for this particular feature. It is my understanding it is a simple video capture device. There is no way it can tell the difference between a tennis racket, your head, shoe, or small animal for that matter. It will take some fancy code to turn that into something that can understand depth and angles. So fancy that I don't think it is possible. Maybe some sort of add-on/upgrade for it though? Even then, I think any kind of device for this will be entirely new and require a brand new purchase.

As much as I enjoy MS's products, this whole comment made me laugh.

Bill: Imagine a totally new revolutionay device... it's a rope... connected by two handles... that kids can play with.
Reporter: You mean... a jump rope?
Bill: NO NO NO! You grasp it in both hands and then proceed to jump over it rythmically. It's totally never been done before, we call it Microsoft's super wacky fun rope, available in Ultimate, Home, Home Basic, and Business.

So I guess if Nintendo were to make Wii sports 2 and the ability to "pick up" the bat or tennis racket is implemented, MS's hopes will apparently be dashed huh.gif

Here son. Take daddy's Callaway Driver and swing it in the living room. Hahaha, yeah right! I think a Wiimote is a bit safer and more practical.

WTF ?

First of all when did anyone start caring about tennis ?

Second, (agreed w/ above poster) who has room or even wants to swing a full size tool in front of their tv ? If I wanted like-life tennis... I'd go outside and play tennis thanks.

This 'concept' is so fucking lame it hurts my head. And, 'surface' is extremely gimmicky, it took the girl like five seconds to write "hi mom!",
