FFVII Not Being Remade - Nomura
Posted by XanTium | 4-6-2007 20:29 EST

From ps3.ign.com:
[QUOTE]
A Square Enix power player has issued the most direct denial yet of a Final Fantasy VII remake. Speaking with Japan's monthly Dorimaga gaming publication, character designer Tetsuya Nomura said, "It appears that there are often overseas rumors like 'Are you currently developing a VII remake?' My apologies, but were absolutely not making [such a game]."

But, as usual, all isn't necessarily lost. Yoshinori Kitase, overall director of the FFVII series, followed up with, "However, when we ask the staff who are making FFXIII why they entered the company, there are many people who say, 'I'm an FFVII fan, I also want to do a remake.'" To this, Nomura added, "We of course know ourselves what the fans want so we'd like to continue thinking up a variety of things. As long as there are people who want to make it and people who are waiting for it, we don't want to proclaim 'the end.'"

I would love to see a remake of it as well. Problem is that remaking it will destroy it. If they remake the same game with the same game play and the same controls but with next gen graphics that would be incredible. But they could never do that. They would have to change some aspect of the game play to appease the new gen of RPG fans that hate turn based combat and that would just be the beginning. In the end it would be a completely different game and everyone would want to forget it and remember the original.

I don't think they would necessarily ruin it by recreating it. The remakes of the earlier Final Fantasies have remained true to the series (even for the FFII and its strange leveling system), so I don't see why they couldn't do something similar for FFVII. It seems like it would be a sure fire money maker, so I'm not sure why it's not already on the books.

The Remakes of FFIII and FIV (in Japan) for the DS have gone over VERY well with fans... those got complete graphical overhauls (they look about PS2 level graphically) and some slight adjustments to the gameplay and script.

There are a few new features, they fixed a lot of the bugs and translation errors that the original titles had among other things. But they left the core plot line, characters, and gameplay intact.

On a whole fans are seeing them as an homage to great games of yesterday rather then a horrible remake.

Every generation people start rumors of a FFVII remake... they've got to make one eventually... the question is WHEN?

What I'd rather see is remakes of the classic FF games- I LOVED the remake of FF3 and the FF4 remake has me even more excited. If they just continued up the series chronologically and kept doing remakes, I'd get what I consider to be the ultimate game- a next-gen remake of FF6. Anytime remakes come up I have to mention FF6.

A FF7 remake would be nice, sure, especially if it got a completely new translation(I was so turned off from the storyline JUST BECAUSE of the translation- "This man are sick," anyone?). But a remake of FF6- now THAT would really make me happy.

A remake of V and VI would be great but I have sneaking suspicion that after IV they'll go back and do I and II. They might do V then go back to I and II this is just a hunch based on pretty much nothing at all.

I remember the rumor of an FF7 remake surfaced about a year or two after the game came out (a few months after all the claims you could revive Aerith).

Anyway, I hope they do. FF7 was excellent; on par with 4-6, IMO (possibly better, cause I really liked the story). If a remake ever does surface, I will buy the specialist special edition of it smile.gif

I thought the tech demo was done on PS2 hardware.

well when FFVII Came out for the PS1 Sqaure Enix (Squaresoft) said that FFVII was rushed, and incomplete, Id honestly like to see the stuff they left out...

I also wouldnt mind a remake of FFVI, best of the FF series IMO

Why spend extra dev. time, money and men power just to remake an old game when the same amount of resources can be used to create a new title of the same quality?

Or.. if Square Enix can no longer make games of FFVII's quality, how is the remake going to be any good?

Since most of us have spent hundreds to even thousands of hours within this game, it will take a lot more than just new graphics to brought out that "Brand New Adventure" feel which we've experienced 10 years ago.

for people stating that Square-Enix did a good job in remaking FFIV for the DS, please remember that the FFIV is a title with much simpler structure and scale and was based on a much low end system(SNES) than FFVII, given the DS' hardware spec, the new conversion isn't entirely high budget either. If Square-Enix truely plan for a FFVII remake? Prepare for some major(and expensive) overhauls.

I think the plot of FFVII has been overly complicated recently with the release of sequels prequels, movies and animes, they rather ruin the atmosphere of the original game, seeing the direction Square Enix took without the original developer, and the disappointing FFX-2, I would feel better if Square-Enix leave the past series alone...

Actually I think a remake of FFVII would probably rake in quite a bit of money. It already has a fan base familiar with the series who would like to see it with updated graphics (since the PSI version didn't give the series very good). I believe it would make alot of money, which would justify the cost of making another game, although your point of doing the series justice is to be debated. However, I don't believe the series went awry with the new Advent Child movie, I believe it provided a much needed conclusion to the series. Any remake of a good movie would be a much welcomed addition to the plethora of titles the PSIII has released thus far. We won't have to worry though the trailer for the FFVII game was only a teaser...
