MS Replies to New GPU Heatsink Story
Posted by XanTium | June 14 15:22 EST | News Category: Xbox360

Gamedaily.com has a reply from Microsoft about the new heatsink found inside the Xbox 360 GPU:
[QUOTE]
Microsoft was deliberately vague in its response to GameDaily BIZ. The company did not deny the inclusion of new heat sinks, but it wasn't exactly confirmed either.

A Microsoft spokesperson provided us with the following statement: "Regularly updating console components is commonplace within the industry and is a standard aspect of the business for a variety of reasons including cost reduction, improved manufacturability and improved performance. We do not provide details on these updates."

first

Hehe, couldnt resist as I watched a video about the "first" guy on Utube the other day.

Seriously though.. they are right. Nobody used to bitch 7 years ago when parts in consoles got improved. It seems to me like a lot of the Xbox users just like to bitch about anything, even improvements.

"Waah Waah Waah" I bought and early unit and I want the improvements.. "Waah Waah Waah" MS should come to my house and give me a new console...

Oh, MS, would you just stop the PR nonsense already. Everyone knows why those components are there, so giving a vague response like that just comes across as shady.

There's a slight difference between an improvement and what Microsoft is doing.

7 years ago, hardware was built right with durability. My SNES and GENESIS still work, as well as my N64, PSX, and Dreamcast. How long have they been around? All were first gen equipment.

My 360 is what, almost 2 years old now? It lasted a little over a year before it started freezing or giving me the circle of death. I also rarely play it. People are complaining because it as an upgrade. They see it as MS fixing a problem that has been complained about since day 1. They see it as an issue worth recalling units for.

who's worse the company that through their entire history has always refused to answer such a question

... or the news organization who continually asks the question anyway and the reports the non-response as news.

If MS doesn't want to talk about then they don't have to talk about it, it's not their people who keep reporting their "no comment"s as news. rolleyes.gif

they call it "updating console components " instead of admitting to a fixing a defect in the design, that way they don't have to pay for a recall to fix a well known problem. It would cost them too much $$, I guess that was the price they pay for having to be "first" to launch Next Gen.

Remember the shitty PSU probs of the xbox 1 systems, all they did was send you a new cord which didn't fix anything. It just covered their asses legally.

I can agree with that, when i heard about the elite coming i was a little peeved in knowing that it would be an updated console and they would quite likely have fixed the errors. Now to hear this aswell well yes i'm not happy about it and i know it always happens, but it is a problem that has been there since the early days, along with a few other problems im sure we all know about. Just doesn't seem fair lol but what can you do eh.

M$ are just hiding behind that that to keep themselves out of it. It's a shame but thats what there like, so no difference there really lol

I'll also say im not happy about this cuz i've had my 360 6months and i've already had to have it replaced.

i think this is nice, but heres a question for the community:

I have been heat gunning a friends 360 over and over again, because it works for about a month after each heat gun trick. if i get my hands on one of these heatsinks and heat gun it before i apply it, will it be the last time i do so? if anybody thinks it will work i will do my damndest to get my hands on one.

Pfft, Microsoft are just a bunch of cheap lying bastards...

With that said though, at least they are doing something about the overheating issues by using this new heatsink.

Yeah I agree it's good that they're doing something, doesn't change the fact that they won't acknowledge the console's original design for the GPU cooling was faulty, upsets alot of customers who they have put through hell. Makes it sound like it's the customer's fault that the xbox is broken, not microsoft's for designing a shonky cooling system for probably one of the hottest (in temperature) GPUs in manufacture today.
People keep talking about how long you play it for a day, who gives a toss, you should be able to play it perpertually and it should not break, except for the moving parts of course, I'd expect any part of the console with moving parts to eventually fail (HDD, DVDdrive), but not the GPU/CPU, they should be adequately cooled so that they do not overheat over any time frame. They should heat up to whatever their operating temperature is for that game/application and plateau at that temperature not keep going up over playtime. If game devs have wrote software which causes the console to overheat they shouldn't receive certification it's that bl00dy simple.
So in summary Microsoft have not adequately cooled their console to cater for how much heat the GPU/CPU will give off running games which have passed Microsoft's certification.

overheating isn't seen too much (the 2 red lights). i can bet you guys that MS has spent time to see why so many consoles have gotten the 3 red lights. do you think peter moore wakes up everyday and laughs at the repair numbers? no. it is bad for business. i bet peter moore wakes up everyday hoping that the 3 red light issue would just disappear. i know i would if i were him. so for whatever reason they added the heat pipe, it has to be doing something good otherwise i don't think they'd just slap something on and waste more money. we're a vocal group here. a lot of people express their feelings. but, we are still a minority. i bet the majority of people with failed consoles don't even know what the inside of a 360 looks like or the first clue about why they're failing. so, a revised heatsink to that person means absolutely nothing as long as they can keep playing their games. is it right that some people are on their 4th and 5th 360's? no. i think it is ridiculous. getting microsoft to "admit" the problem though isn't going to cure anything either. as a company, they are going about it the right way. while it might infuriate some of you. you will eventually get a stable console smile.gif

also, i saw someone talk about developers making games that cause the 360 to overheat. technically this isn't possible. every game will use 100% of the cpu and gpu. so the launch games generate just as much heat as the current games. the differences is efficiency. efficiency doesn't add heat or stress to the system.

my 360 is on for 17+ hours every day, and probably on constantly during the weekends when im not at work, but i have never had a problem. if these original issues were so widespread then i do believe i would have had issues by now.

i honestly think that a lot of the launch failure horror stories will haunt them forever no matter what they do
