Screen Digest Investigates Long-Term Console Performance
Posted by XanTium | June 19 15:44 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From gamasutra.com:
[QUOTE]
In a newly published report, Nick Parker of UK-based analyst group Screen Digest takes an in-depth look at the long term prospects of all three major consoles, wondering if the Xbox 360 has hit a wall, stronger investments in the Wii might "reduce the pot to invest in the other two platforms," and when hardware-driving exclusives might hit the PS3.

For Xbox 360, European hardware sales seem to have hit a wall. The target market is still too focused on adult males and the brand does not enjoy the same cachet in non-Anglo Saxon markets as it does in the US and, to a lesser extent, the UK. The FPS / shooter genre is well served on the Xbox 360 with numerous high quality titles, so satisfying the adult male demographic is not a concern, but failing to break out of a small number of genres and thereby appealing to groups outside of hardcore gamers is.

A scratching of heads has started over questions concerning the long term viability of the platform in some territories. With the UK underpinning European performance and without year on year sales improving across the rest of the region, the platform could be in jeopardy on a global basis. Despite this, some of the most eagerly awaited titles for Q4 cited by consumers are on the 360 (eg, Halo 3, Bioshock).

this whole generation needs some platformers!!! WTF!

the wii has its party games but platformers are few on the system. The ps3 has ratchet and clank.....thats it and the 360 has kameo and banjo kazooie.....thats it!!!

there is no balance in the software, viva pinata was a step in the right direction but it was a step not a movement.

MS needs to do something, they have the most varied games linieup but have no platformers or anything close insight. MS would benefit from that more than anybody else, they got to change the way they are marketing this system. More RPGs and PLatformers or just games that give the system personality.

I should start a fukin analyst group.....every other news story!!!! Yes...we get it, and we already have seen a million other analysis of the industry. Although, they use "Anglo-saxon"(thats me)

Almost as accurate a measurement of the future as "National election polls", theres no such thing as a National Election and I am pretty sure this company has no real idea of the long term viability of any console based on anything in this article.

2 cents

Bioshock will also come out for the PC. Hardcore gamers without an Xbox 360 will not get an Xbox 360 just for this game.

Why is 80% of all games released for the 360 shooters ? The last 20% is racing games.

I loved Kameo but can't find any other similar games. Viva Pinata was good, also rayman raving rabbids, we ned ALOT more games like those!

I just don't get this crap that that %80 are shooters.. The shooters get a lot of attention but here let me list the non-shooters and I am not going to include racing..

Dead Rising
NBA Street Homecourt
MLB Baseball 2K7
Winning Eleven
Fuzion Frenzy
Samurai Warriors 2
Def Jam Icon
TMNT
Virtua Tennis 3
UEFA Challenge
Meet the Robinsons
Tetris Evolution
Spider-Man 3
Shrek the Third
Rapala Fishing
Command and Conquer 3
Pirates of the Carribean
WarTech
Surfs Up
Tenchu Z
Fantastic 4
X-Men
Lord of the Rings Battle for Middle-Earth
Tony Hawk American Wasteland
Enchanted Arms
Ninty Nine Nights
Rumble Roses XXX
Fight Night 3
Top Spin 2
NBA Live
Amped
Table Tennis
Dynasty Warriors 5: Empires
Over-G Fighters
Blazing Angels
Marvel Ultimate Alliance
Bomberman Act Zero
Smack Down vs RAW
Star Trek Legacy
Kameo

And thats just a small sampling.. I think the shooter nonsense was more for Xbox 1 and the 360 has a lot more diversity than either the PS3 or Wii. Sorry to those that hate lists but if you look at the portfolio this nothing but shooters is an old story.. And it's only getting more diverse.

I think the 360 is going to continue steady.. Considering it's beating the PS3 everywhere but Japan and looking at the recent European sales its beating the PS3 2:1 so if the 360 has hit a wall the PS3 has been smashed by a train!
