I was playing Virtua Tennis and then it froze and a weird red checkerboard covered the entire screen. You could still see the actual game behind the checkerboard. I reset the system and it seemed fine, no red lights but the only thing on the display was the grey sphere from the Xbox 360 main screen and a red checkerboard over it. It froze again on boot up.

Turned it on again and I didn't get any display and just the three red lights. The video cables and power supply are fine because I'm using them on my other 360 right now.

What does the red checkerboard freezing mean? I can't find much info on it online, so hopefully someone here knows something. And what is my best option to fix this? X-clamp method or something else? I can't send to MS because it is modded.

Thanks.

EDIT: Well, I put the 360 out of my entertainment center and in the middle of the floor. I put it vertical (it had been horizontal) and it booted up and is working fine right now. I doubt it will stay fine, but perhaps this info may shed more light on the situation. I will report back if and when it freezes again.

EDIT: Ok, that didn't take long. Froze on the dashboard after about 2 mins. More red checkerboards but only on a few areas of the screen.

Alright, I just figured out how to get the secondary error code. It is 0102.

I'll probably try the X-Clamp method this week.

I went and got the stuff for the X-Clamp fix along with some Arctic Silver 5. Once I opened up the case, I had trouble getting the CPU heatsink off, and didn't want to break anything so I didn't replace the X-Clamps.

I was able to get the GPU heatsink off however and noticed a severe lack of thermal paste. As Spider mentioned, the GPU was obviously heating up. I cleaned up the bottom of the heatsink and then applied some of the AS5. I also read about the "Eraser trick", and noticed that it fixes 0102 issues, so I went ahead and did that fix while I had the case open.

Now I'm playing the 360 and it appears to be working great. No problems or anything. Hopefully I won't have another issue but if I do, I can always do the X-Clamp fix as I have the parts for it now.
