Yeah it really depends on your source file. Send me an original source sample, and I can do some test encoding and report back.

Cheers.

Great Tutorial......I am using it to convert some files that I have.

Have you made any progress on the HD DVD front. I would really love to convert the 10 or so HD DVD's that I have hear chewing up my hard drive space so that I can view them on the 360.

Ok......Encoding my first movie via this method. I did run into a problem though. When trying to load the movie.avs file into TMPG, the program crashed everytime. Tried everything and still a no go.

Since I have to go to bed I just loaded the original MKV file as the video source and the audio file that had been remove from it. What is the impact of doing this? It does seem to be working but I will not know how the results were for another 12 hours smile.gif

The results were great. Awesome quality and it retained the 5.1 sound. I guess you don't really need the AVS file.

Thanks for the detailed guide. Will try this tonight - in the meantime I have a question.

Seeing that the spring update supports playback of h264 - and the video in the mkv files is h264. Is it possible to use TMPGEnc so that the net effect is that just the container type is changed from mkv to a container type that the xbox 360 can use to play h264? (If this would be possible - perhaps TMPGEnc could finish its task in a fraction of the time it would otherwise take)

Apologies in advance if I've completely gotten hold of the wrong end of the stick here.

Thanks

It doesn't play H264 Advanced Profile. There may be a way to transcode these on the fly, but I haven't seen a way. Besides, I prefer to archive them and free up my CPU cycles.

perhaps this was already mentioned. but all i've read/seen in the thread is that to play the movie back after re-encoding that you do so through streaming it. can you simply burn the file to a dvd and play in the drive? i'm hoping to maybe free up some hdd space here,

also great tut, i was just wondering about doing this since the 360 isn't your typical stand alone player. googled it and found the tut.

You can burn it to single/dual layer media, depending on which respective output size you've selected.

Yeah, this encodes an advanced profile. Under the step 7 screenshot, look at the blue edit box labeled 'video' and it displays it there. Glad to hear its working well and taking advantage of Quad.

Cheers

Impimin- i can't seem to find the advanced profile option. On the step 7 screenshot it looks like the WMV Advanced Profile is in the video codec drop down menu, however in my copy of the program only WMV7 WMV 8 WMV 9 options are listed, no advanced profile. Any ideas?
