Microsoft misses 12 million Xbox 360 shipment target
Posted by XanTium | July 5 22:48 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From gamesindustry.biz:
[QUOTE]
Peter Moore has confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that Microsoft failed to meet its 12 million shipment target for Xbox 360, but said the company is optimistic about the coming holiday season.

In a conference call, Microsoft CFO Chris Liddell said 11.6 million Xbox 360 consoles were shipped by the deadline of June 30. Before downgrading its estimate to 12 million, Microsoft initially announced 13-15 million units would be shipped.

Liddell acknowledged that the figure is slightly shy of projections, but said Microsoft is still "happy with that number". He also stated that Microsoft expects its Xbox and entertainment and devices division to turn a profit for the 2008 fiscal year.

Maybe 360 sales will pickup:

A> Once people start hearing about the 3 year warranty against the dreaded ring of death.
B> Once Microshaft decides to drop the price instead of asking the customer to drop their pants before being screwed out of hundreds of dollars.

For $400+ I expect 4 controllers, 1 or 2 games, high def cables..... instead you get a console and are expected to shell out for everything else. I'd like to see a console manufacturer recognize that there are some people that will only buy 1 controller and there are others that will buy all 4 just to have on hand for when people are over. Give people a break if they are willing to buy them all together. (I could see paying $450 if I got all 4 controllers in one shot amongst other things...maybe even 475.)

Have you heard of Ebay? jester.gif
You can find what you mentioned at a fraction of the cost you wanted to pay.

We the consumers dictated the market of what is standard.
While your extremely picky on exactly what you expect from a item, The majority will settle for what is given to them, hence why M$ and Sony only include the basics.

If the items didnt sell right off the bat, These companies would have to rethink their strategy on marketing their products to satisfy the majority of consumers. Honestly, with them selling consoles at a loss (figuring in the defective returns) Why do you think they would include more at a loss.

Get a better paying job, buy a cheaper console (the NES is extremely cheap and I bet you can get many accessories and games for next to nothing) or just suck it up like the rest of the us.

I though only sony used the word 'shipped' instead of 'sold'.

Think I have been without a console too long now sad.gif

The Wii sells better because of its price point and also it has more "kiddy" games for it, so parents would rather have their kids playing with their Wii, than playing GOW and killing people on a 360. Plus the fact the new controller might still interest some people, altough it gets old fast sleeping.gif

Once the 360 has a price drop, which they will have to do now since its said that sony will drop the price of the 60GB PS3 to $500 on July 12th I think it was, so MS will have to respond with at least a $50-100 price cut across the board on all consoles. If they drop the core to $200-$250, they could have the Wii by its balls.

software drives a system and the software so far this year for the 360 has been less than steller. Especially compared to last year. When the holiday comes, it s gonna pick up. Its the same problem the ps3 is having. The wii on the other hand is strange cause its selling even though the software sux just as bad as the ps3! That controller is a nice novelty but wears thin real quick. The sales will be the same, its gonna be strong at first and then just start declining real quick. Gotta hand it to nintendo though, they manage to trick everybody in buy a gamecube all over again dry.gif

I do a bit of work at a airport and see lots of kids and young girls that own a wii each. The parents say that they love the wii because of the cost and the suitable games for the age group. Parents also love the fact they can join in and play with them which no other console can really offer.

The 360 is a completely different gaming unit that is only interative with live and system link. The 360 is for the older teenager and single males, female without kids. If I had kids I would prefer them to have a wii in their rooms & not play the 360...

Nintendo now knows and understands it place in the market and will continue to dominate this for the next ten years...

Sales are slowing, but compare that to the PS3. They aren't exactly catching up. On top of this, the big N is really looking impressive. This holiday season is going to be the big showdown.
