Overheard at E3: 'evidently, they do fail sometimes'
Posted by XanTium | July 12 00:18 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From joystiq.com:
[QUOTE]
Bethesda Softworks executive producer Todd Howard, in giving the Fallout 3 presentations, had two Xbox 360's on hand. One had the flashing red ring, but Howard noted it's because there were no AV cables plugged in.

As to why he had a backup console, he quipped, "I do have a backup should one Xbox 360 fail ... evidently they do that sometimes."

so why couldn't they just plug in the AV cables instead of replacing the xbox with a backup?

I'm sure they did plug in the a/v cables, he was just stating that the consoles tend to fail sometimes and he had a backup in that case.

They aren't saying he replaced the one with the four quadrants lit up, just that the reason why he had a backup was in case one actually failed.

I don't get if he was making a joke, or being serious. If it was a joke it's funny. If it was being serious, Microsoft is probably angry. If your being serious, leave the console off the stage, and don't make jokes like that lol.

Of course he was being serious. He HAD to have one work and because he had a 30% chance or whatever it is of it not working, he decided to bring 2.

Makes sense to me.

Its out in the open now, so he can admit it. If it was a year ago then ya, it would have been a problem.

Shoot, if I were going to do a presentation I'd probably bring 3 of em, with a 30% chance knowing my luck both my primary and backup 360 would die, at least with 3 your odds are better of having a working one.

It's actually commonplace for when doing a major presentation involving technology to have some form of contingency. To arrive at an event with only one of the item would be stupid beyond belief.

I believe he was serious and I'm sure that other people presenting with hardware would have the common sense to have a backup.

I agree with Martinchris23.
When I have a presentation, even knowing that a laptop is at disposal, I might take another one just in case. That and copies of my presentation on both CD and USB pen drive.
It does not indicate that I expect a failure, but better be safe than sorry smile.gif

Yes, often when people do things that might put their jobs on the line, they take extra precautions to ensure whatever they are doing does not fail.

Yep. Photographers often take two camera bodies with them incase one packs up. Also, many take two laptops for reviewing images incase one of those breaks also.

Whilst its common place for all electrical items to fail. The question that obviously needs to be asked, is why are both units turned on. If you have a backup then you would simply power it on when needed. You certianly wouldnt leave both powered on, as it gives you no benefit whatsoever and the second you plugin the AV cables the box will reset itself.
