HD DVD group says outselling Blu-ray in Europe
Posted by XanTium | July 12 19:07 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From news.yahoo.com:
[QUOTE]
HD DVD video players have outsold rival standard Blu-ray players by a three-to-one margin in Europe's main markets so far this year, according to a lobby group.
The European HD DVD Promotional Group claimed it had 74 percent market share in Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Switzerland for stand-alone players, citing sales figures it commissioned from market research group GfK.

The figures were for stand-alone players only and did not include sales of games consoles such as Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3, which contains a Blu-ray player.

PS3 should be included because really who would pay around £1000 for blu-ray player when they can just go and get a PS3 for £400

This is stupid really so they can't say HD DVD is winning by a % it's not and really MS arnt helping on the HD DVD front are they it's about time they started to show proper support for it.

The comparison is to show the preference of the non gaming influenced consumer.

No early adopting true Videophile with the financial wherewithal would really consider a PS3 as their HD playback source.

It would be like saying the 100 million people who bought a PS2 bought it to play DVDs.

Movie playback is an added bonus on a console not the reason they are purchased in most cases.

I would even venture to say if BluRay was a factor, it was more the prospect of the storage capacity BR offers for future games.

I would think the videophile would want the best option which is the PS3 for playing blu ray due to it's added value and strong support and considerably lower price. Models of standalone blu ray players will be replaced by newer models every 6 months to a year, while the PS3 will be constantly supported w/ firmware updates and other downloadable benefits years to come due to its internal HD, wifi & being a model that's going to be offered for years.

I think this stat release is a last ditch effort by the HD DVD camp to place a spin on the standalone data towards their benefit.

Completely agree with you, that was one of the major reasons i felt the PS3 was a great purchase. I use the PS3 as my HD movie player in my home theater and couldn't be happier with it, it'll never be outdated by a standalone and has the most features of any blu-ray player on the market with more to come thanks to semi frequent firmware updates.

It is clearly a desperate PR attemt from the HD-DVD people to rescue some of there reputation. They know that they are loosing the fight against BlueRay and now trying to use the old "use-statistics-so-it-benefits-your-needs" trick. It is so oldschool. Even thou it is very powerful. Of coz when they say that they are winning over blueray the non hardcore peple that are going to buy either a blueray or a HD dvd player are going for the HD-DVD. Noone want to stand with a "BetaMax" then "VHS" is the offical standard wink.gif

i fully expect and desire both formats to fail...and by fail i mean to capture less of the media market with poor demand than any expectations nor projections. technology is moving so quickly forward that HD content should and will delivered and stored through online and other digital formats than optical disc media.
