I bought a 360 used off an aquaintance, and the dvd rom drive makes a horrid buzzing/grinding noise when a disk is spinning. Still reads fine, no damage to disks it's just bloody annoying. my question: if i were to get a new samsung drive for it from Llamma, can i just swap it in like the old xbox, or are the drives paired to the consoles? Im not too sure because a freind of mine modded the firmware in his and needed the stock rom from it to patch the hacked fw with and needed his serial number.

TIA

Edit: it's still under warranty i believe, the stickers are still intact, but if it's a quick swap i'd rather just do it myself rather than deal with ms and wait two months for it to come back.

The motherboard and dvdrom are paired with a unique key in the FW. You need to read out the FW from the current drive to get the key. After that you can buy a second hand 360 dvd drive from say ebay or similar and inject your key to the new drives FW. It is possible to switch between samsung<->hitachi.

For more detailed info read the pinned topics about theese issues on this forum.

Inspiration has srtuck me like a sack of bricks. I understand that the new drive needs to have the firmware from the old one flashed onto it in order to work. But what if i were to get the same model drive (the samsung) And swap the controller boards on them, thus swapping the firmware (physically), instead of mucking around with firmware and trying to find a compatible sata controller.

Couldn't edit...

i read through the warranty on MS' website, apperently the warranty is only valid for the original puchaser with an original bill of sale. looks like i'm forced to do it myself either way.

Alright, quick update for anyone that's interested. i Pulled my box apart and saw that something had been dropped on the case and the tin shield on the lid was kinked and pressing against the drive right over top of the plastc disk retainer mechanism\spindle assembly and was causing the noise. works like a top now. best 250 dollars i've ever spent.
