Nintendo's Harrison: Microsoft rushed Xbox 360

From joystiq.com:
GameDaily finished transcribing their interview with Nintendo's VP of marketing and corporate communications George Harrison.
For Microsoft, Harrison says they were so busy trying to rush the Xbox 360 to market and beat PlayStation, while "discounting" Nintendo, that it "set them up for the hardware problems that they're having now." He says Microsoft confessed because they couldn't hide the issue any longer, "It's a stunning admission; it's more than a billion dollars." Harrison says Microsoft didn't have a choice on their admission, it just became too much.
QUOTE(throwingks @ Jul 23 2007, 09:00 PM) ^ Not worried about losing 1.2 billion dollars? That is a pretty big mistake, that Microsoft is absolutely worried about. Vista and Office can't carry their games division for too long.
no, they are not that worried. that estimated amount was written into a financial write-off and the actual realization will be much much less. and that amount (even in total) is only approx 2% of annual net revenue. and analysts still predict (even after the loss) that the Xbox division will become profitable in fiscal 2008. so, no, they are not that worried...

QUOTE regardless, MS is the only of the 3 companies that could afford to do this and still succeed so i am sure that they are not that worried at all...
You don't think SONY has enough resources and could afford to rectify a similar situation, should it occur? I'm quite sure if a hardware debacle hit the PS3 like it did the 360, and SONY implemented their own "new warranty", they would most assuredly survive it. I don't own a PS3, but I do know the company backing it. Eventually, the PS3 will be a successful console...it is backed by an enormous corporation, with enormous resources. Now, Nintendo might have a harder time, should something happen with their product, but they have been business forever, and i'm sure would eventually pull out and be successful. I love the 360's capabilities, but whomever signed off on the cooling system/heatsink design should be working at Waffle House frying eggs, instead of allowing all these consoles to "fry".

deff. a dead horse....but i wish there was an actual admission on m$'s behalf as to the exact cause of the rrod....that would put the whole thing to sleep instantly imo QUOTE(throwingks @ Jul 24 2007, 03:00 AM) ^ Not worried about losing 1.2 billion dollars? Despite taking a USD 1.15 billion charge related to Xbox 360 warranty issues, Microsoft finished the quarter ending June 30 with revenue of USD 13.37 billion and net profit of 3.04 billion. Revenue growth was driven primarily by Windows Vista and Microsoft Office 2007. http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=613486#i guess it is a 1/4 of their profit This post has been edited by yourM0M: Jul 24 2007, 03:04 AM

They may have turned a profit this quarter, but all of Xbox1 was a loss, and Xbox360 has finally had 1 profitable quarter. A lot of profitable quarters are needed to make up for the hole the gaming division is in. That is why I said Vista and Office cannot carry their gaming division for long. Someone in charge is going to get tired of losing money. I am talking about the gaming division of Microsoft. Microsoft would be worth a lot more if they never started Xbox. They are hoping profitable sales in the future generations and spinoff projects make up for the losses of Xbox1. Edit: Were you agreeing with me? It seemed like not, then your argument was the same as mine. ??? This post has been edited by throwingks: Jul 24 2007, 03:33 AM

Actually no Sony couldn't handle it. They are already hurting as it is. Their losses on the PS3 so far is 3 billion+ and it hasn't even been a year yet. It is losing so much that it is sucking up every last drop of the profit from its' other divisions.
