Robbie Bach about RRoD: 'we have a much better design in the market now'
Posted by XanTium | July 30 23:35 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From spong.com:
Speaking to investors, Microsoft's president of the Entertainment and Devices division, Robbie Bach, has indicated that the 360 has a new design that sidesteps the infamous 'Red Ring of Death' problem.

"It's a design challenge that we've had to work around and create a new design to solve that problem, and for the interaction of a variety of different components. And so that's a Microsoft design question, not some component manufacturer's problem or our manufacturing partner's problems. It's something we've had to work on. We know we have a much better design in the market now. We verified that."
We're not sure what Bach is talking about here. Spong assumes he's talking about the Xbox360 Elite, but I didn't see Bach say that. He could be referring to the 'glued' GPU, the new heatpipe to the GPU heatsink or maybe the new 'Falcon' motherboard with 65nm CPU/GPU is already in production (was originally expected for this summer).

Man, stop lying. All the shelves still have the same garbage. I just opened one two days ago.

The day I see the new chip and mobo is the day I buy another 360.

maybe he means they have started making the new design, and it's going to take a while for all the stock to rotate?

Then its not in the market?

I guess im assuming that he means the new falcon that's supposed to be out soon.

If he's talking about the "fixes" on current mobo's then he's lying to a bunch of men with a bunch of money.

You need to look at the manufacture date of your console buddy. I just purchased an elite today (they JUST got them back in stock after not having any for weeks for some strange reason), my elite has the new heat sink on the GPU that extends under the dvd drive out by the other heat sink. I haven't opened it up yet, but it clearly has it, looking through the side with a flash light, the new heat sink is there, I have compared it to my other 360.

Anyways, I don't know if it has the new smaller CPU etc, but they are definatley putting out new hardware in the systems. What you need to do is look at the manufacture date which can be seen simply by opening up the little "serial number" tab and pulling the packaging up a little bit, you can see it without opening it up.

My date was 2007-06-20 Just more than a month old. BUT YOU MUST CHECK the date, because I purchased a xbox 360 premium the other day (I returned it for this elite) that had a manufacture date in 2006! I am not kidding, it had no dash updates AT ALL. So, yes, there are new ones on shelves (like I said the elites just came in today) you just need to be sure you get the one with the heat sinks.

You can see them without taking the box apart like I said above, using a flash light, you see the cpu heat sink about middle and the other one is twords the front (closer the the faceplate). You will see two copper "nobs" within some nice shiny metal.

Anyways, I was excited to get one today, just thought I would chime in. I would like to keep my warranty in tact, but I am also interested to see whats under those heat sinks! Maybe I will take it apart tomorrow and check it out... I can always return it to target and get a new one within 90 days.

I wonder if the three year extended warranty cost and number of complaint calls and repairs was worth it to ship the next-gen console out first uhh.gif

Well I can confirm the new heat pipe doesn't prevent 3 ROD

M$ sent a reconditioned system with the new heat pipe design about 1 month ago now it has 3 ROD again

POS!!!!!!!!! I will post a picture or something once I get it from an angry customer

Naw lumpstatus, thats what im saying and why im saying they are liars. This new band aid does NOTHING.

It may cool your box another 5 degrees (and it does) but it doesnt prevent the RROD (it doesn't even seem to decrease the incidence although I haven't seen tons of them so I dont know). Since there is no falcon on the market, tell me what Robbie is going on about.

Anyways, I think its all bs, but didn't know if everyone else did. No offense lumpstatus, but your box is no different than any of the other launch consoles except yours will run a few degrees cooler.

THATS IT.

/opinion

And I hope RBJ gets a chance to evaluate these things. I trust that guy over M$ any day.

Well, I don't see how you can say that since they haven't been out long. How do you knwo 5 degrees isn't all it needs. Not saying that I know anything more than you, but how do you know it will fail? Why would microsoft spend a billion dollars (or whatever it is) to have these fail and then they have to repair it for free anyways, thats like them shooting themselves in the foot twice (one in each foot). It really makes no sense for them to "pretend" its fixed, because they extended the warranty and they have to fix it for free anyways.

As for the other guy who said he got a refurb with the new pipes, thats probably your problem. You got a refurb, which probably still had the problem with the mobo, they just put new heat sink in and hoped it would work.

I very well may be completely wrong here, but maybe these NEW ones (not refurbs) will have the problem solved. I don't think we can speculate yet since they are JUST now coming out (again, I am talking new consoles, not refurbished). I have never had an xbox 360 fail on me. I still have my launch console and it is still running fine, a couple friends have had 3 rrod, so I won't deny there is DEFINATLEY a problem, but why would they "pretend" the problem is fixed and extend the warranty. That means they wasted money pretending to fix the problem and put in this new hardware, and they also are going to spend even more money fixing a problem that they pretended to fix.

Just doesn't make any sense to me. They are a big company with a lot of money, but I don't think they would purposely burn it for no reason.

Also, when you say 5 degrees cooler, have you tested this? Where are your measurements from? Is there any documentation on this? I hardly think ms would waste their time and a billion dollars for 5 degrees.

No your right, I dont know.

I edited my post from "I know its all bs" to "I think its all bs" because thats true. I dont know.

They put all that cash in a new board and chip. Not to mention 3 year warrenty.

I dont think that this new sink and epoxy on the gpu will mean anything in regards to RROD. My opinion, thats it. If I did, I'd go out and buy one tonight.

*Ive tested them with a thermohawk (hardly concrete) and found them to run 5 degrees cooler on the CPU versus a stock V 1.0 360. Thats all. (so no test on GPU, which is why I hope someone like RBJ gets ahold of one of these soon so we know)

What I was saying in the beginning was that this new board and chip wasn't out yet so that couldn't be what RB was eluding to.

Your comment "I would like to keep my warranty in tact, but I am also interested to see whats under those heat sinks! Maybe I will take it apart tomorrow and check it out" made me think that you thought that this was fixed. I just dont think it is and i'd hate for your box to crap out in 2 months with nowhere to go but sell it as broken on ebay. sad.gif

It's all about perceptions... Customers perceive MS as having stepped up and dealt with the problem, whether they actually have or not. US$ 1bn in provisions is MUUUCH cheaper than class-action lawsuits, recalls, loss of customers, bad press, etc.

And it's a provision, not actual cost. If, for some reason, not all 12m XBOXes are sent for warranty repair, they can write some of that provision back, and show a profit at the end of it all.

It's good to be the king, and screw your citizens over...

Seems to think they have them out now.
Does this mean that all the new ones do not have 3 year 3ROD warranty then? I mean they won't need it if they cured the problem, will they??

That bit there has you in trouble here. What you are suggesting is warranty fraud. If you open the 360 you void the warranty... simple as. It has been stated loads on here, that we don't want to know at all. Shame, you made some good points up to that.
