Chartered Already Hints at 45nm Xbox360 Chip
Posted by XanTium | August 1 10:34 EST | News Category: Xbox360

The 65nm 'Falcon' GPU/CPU chips aren't even in the stores yet, and Chartered is already talking about moving to 45nm chips. From pcadvisor.co.uk:
[QUOTE]
Singaporean contract chip maker Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing will produce a 45-nanometre (nm) processor designed for video-game consoles, probably an upcoming version of the processor used in Microsoft's Xbox 360.
"We have customers' activity for products in the CPU space that goes into a video-game device," Chia Song Hwee, Chartered's president and CEO, said when discussing the company's 45nm manufacturing plans with analysts during a recent conference call.

Chia said the design of the 45nm video-game processor is not yet complete, and hinted that production of the CPU - as well as other products designed for the 45nm process - is not likely to begin until late 2008 or early 2009.
"As 65nm just started production in the last two quarters, you would expect 45nm to come on stream about 18 months from that timeframe," said Chia, referring to when Chartered expects to begin production with the 45nm processor.

For those who dont understand

The rumored smaller chips that were supposed to be out during the summer have already been in production for the past 2 quarters

Now theyre talking about an even SMALLER chip that wont be finished for another year or two. Sounds like MS is really pushing to get the 360 down to PS TWO size.

That 2 quarters are about PC graphics chips - AMD(Radeons) or Nvidia.

what i want to know is weather or not the 65nm chip is in the newest elites. i am going to buy an elite but i would rather have one with the new falcon mother board. does the fact that they've been in production the last 2 quarters necessarily mean that they are in the systems sitting on the shelves?

Are 65nm out yet? Just watch, the 3 year warranty MS gave us will wear off just before the release of 45nm muhaha.gif

The CPU's and GPU's may have been in production for the past 2 quarters in 65nm, but all that means is the CPU and GPU may be ready to go on the motherboards, doesn't mean that MS is producing the falcons yet (in large quantities), nevermind shipping them.

I'm sure given all the issues with the current 360's, this time MS with throughly test these new falcon 360's to make sure they truly are within and hopefully under the industry standard failure rate.

Also about the falcon's, will they all have HDMI? since MS is making what looks to be a new motherboard, think they will add HDMI to all SKU's?

I remember reading about having HDMI in white colored 360's, but don't remember if it was just the elite available in white or if they plan on putting HDMI in all. Would be a nice way to tell the falcon apart from the old version (for the core/pro anyway).

im been holding out for an 360 for a while purely for 360's f'ing up..now im really keen on this elite but it makes it really hard for me to buy one with an enhanced gpu/cpu they all look the same from the outside..what would be the reason why microsoft wouldn't let any know when the enhanced 360's will be on shop shelves...i know of people that own 360's but are more than keen on getting the enhanced 360 just for that peace of mind (dnt blame em cos after going through 2 360's)
