HD DVD: We're Not at War with Blu-ray
Posted by XanTium | August 20 17:16 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From betanews.com:
[QUOTE]
It's hard to miss the ping pong game of rhetoric between the promotion groups pushing HD DVD and Blu-ray. From sales figures to exclusive deals, press releases are churned out almost daily. The so-called "format war" is Betamax and VHS redux - at least that's what the media wants you to think.

But the real competition is with standard-definition DVDs and convincing the masses of the merits of hi-def. And that's the crux of why HD DVD just doesn't care that Blu-ray has more studio deals or the PS3: none of this matters yet until more people start upgrading.

Unfortunately, you won't hear either side say that publicly, because it's important to make consumers feel like they are missing out by not becoming early adopters. The advantages aren't as clear as they were with first-generation DVDs, and a format war helps garner critical media attention.

Cost of equipment and the movies themselves is a major factor. Plus people have been stung with format wars before.

If the war is against standard DVD's then they really have to sort the pricing out. A good example is Starship Troopers on Blu Ray at £24 on play.com or buy the DVD for £6, to Joe public its a no brainer.
Bring the price of the discs down and we will all embrace HiDef.

"The advantages aren't as clear as they were with first-generation DVDs"

that is the most important statement about this "format war" - who cares when the benefits aren't that great to begin with - even up-converting standard DVDs look great on HDTVs that the masses already own...why would the general public want to embrace "hi-def"

for me, it's all about distribution - when i can get all of my media distributed from one central server in the home to any TV outlet, then i am sold, and for now XBMC does that with my DVD collection...

Excuse me, since when did Blu-Ray have more studio deals? As I count it now, HD-DVD has 12 studio deals, and Blu-Ray has 10, with 2 that haven't produced a BD disc in months. Source: Gizmodo

Same here... Every time I decide there's an HD movie I want I set that money aside. I now have well over a grand for HD media (excluding money set aside for a player)... I'm just waiting for the formats war to decide where that money goes.

I don't think these corprations give consumers enough credit... the market of people likely to drive sales of HD media are the same group of consumers who are smart enough not to dump thousands on one side of a format war.

And before you start spewing some crap about dual format players it's not the cost of the player I'm worried about it's the cost of the media... I have over 500 DVD releases in my collection. I will be making a massive investment when I go HD I'm not spending a dime unless I know I'm buying something that's going to last the next 15-20 years.

I'm waiting for Nintendo to announce their new Wii Watch optical media at GDC. It'll only store 16% more than a standard DV9, however they're implementing what's called a "Blue-Ocean" strategy, and while I have no freaking clue what that means, it sure sounds innovative!

...

Alright, I'm done ripping on the Wii... for a little while at least. wink.gif

This format war is going to be ugly. Anybody who has their cookies cashed on a particular camp at this point is either:

A)Ridiculously wealthy
B)Ridiculously... ridiculous
C)Ken Kutaragi or Robbie Bach
