HD DVD Paid 150 million USD to Studios for 'Promotional Consideration'
Posted by XanTium | August 20 22:34 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From gizmodo.com:
[QUOTE]
Paramount and Dreamworks went HD DVD exclusive today. Then, a Hollywood news blog reported that the HD DVD camp paid Paramount $50 million and DreamWorks Animation $100 million for "promotional consideration." We asked Paramount and the HD DVD camp about this, and received a quick albeit vague reply: "Whenever we conduct co-marketing, production deals or other agreements, we never discuss business terms."

I take that as a confirmation of sorts--certainly it isn't a denial--but is it bad, or even out of the ordinary?

no amount of money would make a studio choose a "losing" format (as so many have dubbed HD DVD), and on the other hand such a small amount of money would not make one format the winner over another...so only time will tell about this battle between optical formats...however until the consumer overwhelmingly chooses this HD content - neither format can be considered even close to a "winner"...and by that time these two formats will possibly be trumped by the next-gen format...

Nope, not bad at all. I'm just glad I'll be able to watch Transformers and Blades of Glory in HD DVD glory. I hope they actually have features that aren't possible on Blu-Ray though. And does this mean that Paramount will be re-releasing other Blu-Ray only titles they produced, if there were any?

Oh yeah and Sony didn't pay other studios to support their Blu-ray campaign. I also find many people saying that MS paid this amount, they might be a member but MS did not roll out the cash for this.

I find it funny how whether it's 50mil to Rockstar or $150mil to Paramount it always makes news, yet Sony's shadey deals never make it to the public. Sony are the masters of under the table shadiness and gagging with their partners. Yet they come out with this "We don't pay for exclusives" BS! Tell us Target, how much did Sony pay you for the exclusive endcaps and BR promotion this holiday? Oh, lemme guess you did it out of the goodness of your heart!

Either way, it's a win for HD-DVD and more fuel to the HD format war.

Yay... I guess it's good that there's more on HD DVD now, but it's sad it's gotten to the point they have to pay them so much to go to HD DVD. sad.gif

So that makes Blu-Ray really really really sad when they paid all their studios to go either exclusive or become dual supporters? And how about all the money they paid for pseudo-exclusives with Blockbuster and Target? Talk about sad and desperate in your little world. Right?

Why are people saying that Sony paid people to get them to like Bluray? As much bad press as Sony gets there's really nothing they can hide anymore so if they really did pay for bluray supporters there would be an article about it. The fact is most companies don't want to spend extra money to support two formats. So if they have to pick just one they usually pick the one that will be around the longest, which is bluray with it's higher capacity per layer. All the bluray haters on here are just mad because they can't afford a PS3.

As for who paid... HDA consortium did.
Go look at supporters, Intel and Microsoft are there... it's not only Toshiba.
So it's sad but true, if Viacom was bribed then Microsoft (and others) gave the money.

At the end of the day end costs to the user will be the major deciding factor.
It must be nice when you see a distinct lack of support for something you are selling, to be able to buy some support.
In any other walk of life it would be corruption of the highest order.
Both formats will co-exist for a long time to come.
It is amusing how many people feel so threatened when one or other of the formats takes a step forward. I mean why is this taken so personally.

I'd love to see what blu-ray charges, probably double that.

Yes, 100gb with about seven layers, a $100 support (16+ substrates).
BD reach 25Gb with one layer (and this balance initial cost since most BD are single layer while every HD is dual layer) and 50Gb with two layer with standard current technology (does standard "FTW" XBox360 HD-DVD support three layer HD-DVDs ?).
As it is right now the "best" format archieved (Jan 2007) by Toshiba is an experimental triple layer (with a layer extended from 15 to 17 Gb), this goes up to 51 Gb, but it's just an experimental "hack" and not something that every reader is supposed to read.
And since BD and HD are really similar on the optical side they'll reach the same price tags at the same time.

You should try to avoid flaming.
