Study: Consoles Center of Digital Home
Posted by XanTium | August 20 22:36 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From next-gen.biz:
[QUOTE]
Videogame consoles will be the primary method of bringing digital content to home TVs and stereo systems in 2012, according to a new study.

ABI Research said Monday that it forecasts an installed base of 184 million digital media adapters (standalone or embedded devices that route audiovisual content to TVs and stereo systems) in 2012.
Game consoles will make up an overwhelming 85 percent of this installed base, while just over 11 percent will be standalone devices.

those are some very impressive and specific predictions for the future of home entertainment - at least 5 five years from now...

gaming consoles do make a good medium to become the center of a digital home with their processing power and widespread install base already...it would be hard to market a stand-alone device that is not a gaming console unless the storage and/or price provided some strong leverage...

XBMC is already a "center for my digital home" - especially with several networked throughout my home...

consoles would first need to allow users to play the video content that they have. like DivX.

Maybe if you got XMBC with Xvid playback. Otherwise this study is bullshit. They didn`t take IRC or torrents or Usenet into consideration. jester.gif

Well guys, all I can say is that right now as it stands, there's only been about 50+% work done on hacking the 360's kernal. That's roughly from all the achievements (progress) they have made. So hopefully by this time next year it should be completely hacked. can't wait to run xbmc on my 360, that's the only reason why I still have my xbox around, as a media center. biggrin.gif

Say what you want, I believe the 360 won't ever be fully exploited like Xbox 1. unsure.gif Lesson learned from M$ I say, at least one lesson.
