VGChartz: Nintendo Wii is market leader in home console business
Posted by XanTium | August 22 17:47 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From the vgchartz press release:
[QUOTE]
Vgchartz.com, the most comprehensive Videogame charts in the world has announced that lifetime sales of Nintendo's Wii have passed Microsoft's Xbox 360 on a worldwide basis as of August 23rd.
Xbox-Scene

Two years ago, very few analysts would have predicted the Nintendo Wii would be market leader this generation against the established Playstation and Xbox brands. But analysts can be in error: Vgchartz.com data, which is based on sample data from retailers all over the world indicates that the week ending August 23rd Nintendo's Wii (which was released one year after the Xbox 360 in November 2006), currently standing at 10.57 million consoles sold, passed Xbox 360 lifetime sales of 10.51 million units, making Nintendo the new market leader in both the home and handheld videogame console businesses.

As weekly data from vgchartz.com shows, the console outsold Microsoft's Xbox 360 by a margin of 2.3 : 1 worldwide on average each week since its release, selling at an even faster rate than the most successful console ever created, Sony's Playstation 2, despite still being sold out in most major markets.

360 still has a 50% lead over the wii in the US though. japan is really killing the 360's numbers there.

I like the quote "But analysts can be in error" relating to no one predicting that the Wii would have the lead.

Nintendo has surprised us all for sure - I kept wondering when the novelty of the system would fade out and sales start to decline - and I was very wrong on when I thought that would occur.

These numbers also show just how much the Japanese do not like the 360 at all...

It seems pretty clear to me that these numbers show Nintendo's dominance in Japan. 360 is clearly the leader still for the rest of the world. The Japanese consumer is very different than the American or European consumer.

Here is a VGChartz graph of Wii USA sales, Wii Japan sales, and Xbox360 Worldwide sales.
http://www.vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php?cons1=...60&reg3=All

More American than Japanese Wii sales. Although the population of Japan is a lot less.
USA Population: 301,139,947
Japan Population: 127,433,494

I think more software/titles like "Blue Dragon" could make a huge diffrence in the 360's perception in Japan. Most of the other asian/Jap releases for the 360 have just been of poor quality thus reflecting poor console sales.

Anyone agree/disagree?

I wish this was digg so I could digg this down for having a misleading title. This has me to believe they are comparing a toy like the Wii with a console like the 360. tongue.gif

I have a Wii and a 360 and I like the both. At least the Wii doesn't lock up, overheat or fail on me in any way during extended play.

The 360 f-ing locks up every 30 minutes and gives me a "dirty disc error" even on discs that are perfectly clean. Fking microsoft and their fking lame lowest bidder parts!

Still love the games though. When they work.

I have a wii as well but i rarely play it. I just like the games on my 360 better. And my PS3 still waiting for a game I like so it rarely gets turned on. sad.gif

Also if you 360 is malfunctioning stop whining and send it in for repairs!!! mad.gif

As far as this poll goes all it shows me is the PS3 is getting ass reamed and then some. tongue.gif

The problem with 360 is that it has too few RPG, action adventure games that suits Japanese consumers' taste. Take a look at all the big titles on the 360 such as GOW, bioshock, halo3, COD4 etc. They are all FPS which even I myself don't think there should be so many FPS on the console as they play much better with a mouse and a keyboard.

This hasnt gt shit to do with japan,

Wii sales are still rocking all over the world,
And it will stay like that for another 6 months and even after that when super smash brawl and the other mario games pop up its gonna get another boost,

What do PS3 and 360 have?
Halo 3 and Killzone 2.... both shooters with a matchable story line.

Nintendo is taking the lead baby!

i think a better, more fair representation, would be to show the sales by months. as in, what did each console sell in the first month, second, and so forth. that would give a more accurate return as to where things are as far as popularity of the console at that given time.

VGChartz can do that. When you are at the graph from the article, click align launch and weekly sales.

IS this what you are looking for? Launches are aligned.
