August Xbox360s Still go RRoD
Posted by XanTium | August 30 23:24 EST | News Category: Xbox360

It looks like Xbox360 produced in August 2007 still get the RRoD ... I guess that means still no Falcon motherboards in August (or atleast not all production lines) ... unless MS still didn't solve the issue on this new board, but I doubt that as this issue is costing MS enough already.
From gearlive.com:

Yeah, another one - but there is a bit more to this story. This Xbox 360 has been used for all of 20 minutes. You see, about three weeks ago my old box 360 crashed and was giving me the three Red Lights of Doom. I sent it in for repair, and today I finally got a replacement. This actually is a replacement - they didn't fix the one I sent in, they just sent me a new one. This one happened to have been manufactured on 8/15/2007. Anyway, I got it in the mail, hooked everything up, went through the Dashboard configuration, and started playing a demo. Fatal Intertia. We got tired of that after about ten minutes, and decided to boot up the demo of Stranglehold. We got through the opening sequence when everything froze. Fair enough. I had to manually turn the Xbox 360 off because it wouldn't even respond to the guide button. I turned it back on, and was presented with yes another Three Red Ring Circus.

I thought that in the past, Microsoft has stuck new serial number stickers on refurbed 360s? It's possible this is actually old 360 internals in a new case.

at least this guy didnt have his 360 eat the discs....

out of 6 consoles that i had one of them put circles in my discs for no reason. Microsofts response "you were tailting the console while it was on".

Oh well... hopefully soon those flacon motherboards wwill be out in the wild and the 2ng GPU in tyhere as well and hopefully some better disc drives.

Bought an Elite today! played it all day with no problem smile.gif

Not to say you want get any RROD with the added heatsink. but who said this would make it 100% perfect? perhaps the 2nd heatsink put the 360 back into the 3-5% defect rate and he just got a bad one..
is that impossible?

Hey DrPepperfan, I actually work with Microsoft Xbox Tech Support. The answer you were given is true, however not the full story.

Can I ask, did you play your games while it was Vertical or laying on its side?

The 'perfect circle' scratch on any game disc is due to one reason, and one reason only: movement of a powered on console. Unfortunately this is bad for gamers that like Guitar Hero and jam out while playing. If the console is in tower position than you're likely going to wobbling it, and in some cases it will fall over.

Now the issue here is that the 360's inner disc laser tray has to readjust when it is moved, and that movement... well something is going to get scratched, and unfortunately it's the disc, and in perfect form.

Don't think that I am harking on you here, just looking for info man. smile.gif

Btw, you did get those games replaced right? Microsoft has it's own Disc Replacement plan, for it's games... while nearly all other game manufactures have their's as well.

Edit: On second thought, I think I talked to the original poster today, of that first post on here lol. If you post here, holler.
Later.

yes, however there are other ways for MS to fix the RRoD than introducing the 65nm GPU.
In essence the RRoD is a motherboard/heatsink design error, not a heat or nm issue. I'm sure they could make the 90nm GPU work fine on a better designed motherboard/heatsink.

I got my xbox 360 back around august 10th or so. I brought it home, and booted it up, everything was fine, then i try to connect to xbox live, and i get no connection.

I tried wireless, wired, direct connection, wired through router, none of it worked. The network adapter was not working on the xbox 360 so i took it back,

Then the it started scratching my discs and again I had to take it back, so within the first week of getting a new xbox 360, i had to go to the store 3 times.

Right now I have one that was manufactured in july of 07 but the bad thing is, it doesn't have a benq drive, its a hitachi. oh well at least I haven't had to take it back yet. and good thing best buy offers a 2 two year product replacement plan.

I was very close to just returning everything and saying I'm done with it. If Microsoft wants to sell more xbox 360, they need to stop charging customers hundreds of dollars for trouble. I mean I love the 360, I play it all the time, i dont want a Wii or a ps3. Microsoft made a great product and made great games to support it, it just cant be enjoyed by the customers.

QUOTE
not a heat or nm issue

It astounds me that folks still think that heat is not a problem in Xbox 360s. Engineers with far more knowledge than any of us have stated that there is not enough cooling in the console. Why is this so hard to believe? The motherboard does not warp because it is defective, it warps because it gets too hot.

I am a PC system builder by trade. I remember when Intel came out with the Prescott core P4 processors. They mandated that any Prescott system had to have an air guide on the side of the chassis so the CPU could draw in fresh cool air instead of the hot air circulating inside the case. If the lowly Prescott CPU needed high volumes of fresh air to keep cool why does a triple core CPU of roughly the same clock speed not need it? The fans inside the Xbox 360 spin so slow you can barely feel air hitting your hand when you place it behind the chassis. Compare that with the amount of air you feel coming out of the back of your computer.

The bottom line is the Xbox 360 does not have enough air flowing through it to exhaust the extreme amount of heat that is generated inside the box. Adding extra heat sinks inside its chassis only robs Peter to pay Paul. The damn thing is still going to be too hot to be reliable until they increase the airflow through the chassis.

Yes, the 65nm processors may help, but the GPU is still the same hot SOB that they have always used.

After two years of this BS it should be obvious that Microsoft does not care enough to actually fix the problem that any home user can just by increasing airflow through the box.

(Don't even get me started on the issue of the lead free solder rolleyes.gif )

I still think the xclamps and their single tiny pressure point on the motherboard under the middle of the chip isn't helping. Add the heat to the equation and the board is bound to flex.

Putting a better heatsink in will help, but the xclamp is still there trying to flex the board away from the corners of the chip.
I would have liked to have seen a fan on the new heatsink as well.

If they had a heatspreader on the top of the chip that went all the way to the corners that would have helped distribute the downward pressure that the heatsink applies to the edges of the chip rather than the lopsided pressure on the GPU that is there currently due to its layout.

Is anyone making a decent 3rd party GPU heatsink and fan combo?

Too bad they don't tell us if it had HDMI at the back. If this thing didn't have a HDMI-port at the back, then it isn't worthy of "news". Just like saying that an Xbox 360 manufactured in 2005 still breaks down, even after I show it that it has a 3 year warranty.

Exactly. They didn't even bother to open it up before claiming it was a new box.
Bullshit news.

exactly, which is an improvement over the current 90 nm model, esp with the HDMI port as well...oh, and the price has been dropped too...some people will always find something to complain about...
