Dean Takahashi: 360 uses 194watts, PS3 171 watts, Wii 17watts
Posted by XanTium | August 31 23:18 EST | News Category: Xbox360

From Dean Takahashi on mercurynews.com (free reg. req.):
[QUOTE]
To test the power efficiency of my products, I used a simple test. I got a device that measures electrical usage. It's called the Kill A Watt. You plug one end into the wall and plug your device into the three-pronged socket on the Kill A Watt. Press the watt button and you can see how much electricity the device is using.

The game consoles yielded some predictable results. The Xbox 360 Elite came in at 194 watts. That's why it has the whirring fans inside the box as well as in the power supply that is inside the large "brick" in the power cord. The PlayStation 3 came in at 171 watts. But the Nintendo Wii consumed a measly 17 watts.

Side One: Yet another reason why the Wii is awesome!

Side Two: Look how much the Wii sucks! It's so weak compared to the other two!

The rest of us are playing games.

Yes, who do we beleive.

Maybe the Xbox 360 Elite (HDMI digital output) is sapping more juice than the Pro and Core (Analog output).

that is actually quite low (if even true) compared to the PCs that are kept on all the time anyways. i even saw an 850W PSU the other day in the store - wow, mine is only 430W and that is still with dual-core and half a dozen HDs as well (and yes i know that the PSU wattage does not equal constant or average drain or load).

still, the Wii coming in that low is quite impressive - even with those complaining about how "weak" the Wii is in computational power - you cannot deny it must have the best "pleasure per watt" rating of all of them...

Geez, it would of been nice if Dean Takahashi knew the definition of efficiency: the ratio of the effective or useful output to the total input in any system. All he was doing was measuring usage (the input), nothing more.

It'd be cool if they tested a gaming PC that is able to run the same titles as 360/PS3.

And of course the Wii uses so little power, it's a last-gen system.

On the contrary! It's a well known fact that the Wii only produces 1.2 kilogasims per hour. The 360 produces 2.6 megagasims per hour.

to bad the first and third links are useless, as they have nothing to do with how much power the console actually uses, just how much it can use.

a real gamer wouldnt care about these numbers. sure the wii may save on electricity, but looks how many extra calories it makes me use. with my 360 i think i get a 90% savings on calories burned which equals less pizzas i have to eat to maintain my gelatanous caveman like figure. some time when im playing my wii i actually have to drink non-diet sodas and use my inhaler just to keep my limbs moving. lets not even get into the issue of sweat.

x360= WIN

Hahaha my girlfriend complains about me using bright-assed 100w light bulbs in ceiling lamps (aren't that what they're called?) so she switches them out with those dull 40w bulbs.

I'm definitely not going to tell or let her know how much the 360 consumes ph34r.gif
