I heard that you can do it by looking at the tray configuration, but i haven't been able to find any info on this. Is it bs? I was under the impression that the only way to be sure was to look on the actual drive. Thanks

You can tell if its a Hitachi, Samsung, or a BenQ by looking at the drive tray, but you won't be able to tell what rom version it is without actually looking on the sticker attached to the DVD rom drive. The Rom version is what matters, not the drive type.
