Major Nelson: Xbox Live Bans and you - no 23k 24h Bans

From majornelson.com (FYI: MS owned blog):
I've seen a few stories circulating today about a huge Xbox LIVE banning related to the COD4 beta. I went and chatted with the ban hammer folks, and confirmed what I suspected: We did NOT ban tens of thousands of folks yesterday as some are reporting. As many of you know we do sometimes have to take action against accounts and consoles that violate the Xbox LIVE Terms of Use. Although we're really impressed with the excitement around the Call of Duty 4 multiplayer beta, I do want to take this moment to point out that that the steps I've been reading about that some people have been trying to take to get in on the beta without their own token could very well violate our Terms of Use.
Remember that sharing accounts isn't just a violation of the terms, which could get you banned, it's actually not a good thing to do in general. People can get details about you or content from you, or try to take action against you when you do something like that. It is your responsibility to keep your account information safe. Regarding the COD4 beta, the best advice I can give in a situation like this is try and be patient. We know you all want to play, and we think that's great, but if you break the rules, you can be banned.
Um.. did I miss something? When did I say anything about the 24 hour bans or anything about this topic? The only thing at all that I commented on was your post where you freaked out talking about running over MS employees. Looks like the employees at Microsoft can sleep safe tonight knowing that pRtkwhatever lost his motives.. if only the same could be said about those poor squirrels..

QUOTE(Heet @ Sep 7 2007, 04:39 AM) You think this guys just happens to stroll down there to ask a question? Maybe an email, possibly a phonecall, but to go face to face to say "hey xbl team" "did you guys REALLY ban 23,000 of our customers?" There are a lot of people on the net that did it but never got banned, so maybe they stopped mid-ban? Im not going to speculate anymore because the truth is I have no idea what happened. But for them to respond to the response the way they did.....I think speaks volumes as to what happened. I took it as "sorry we overreacted but you guys cant do crap like that". He either knew about it before hand or he didn't and judging by what has happened with this outfit so far, Im betting he didnt.
Sounds right to me....good analysis. ~Dj~

Good day,
Being a possible MS employee, I can confirm 100% that I had one of my boxes banned for this issue, and am willing to admit it and suck up the cost of another box.
Here's what else I can confirm:
1) I had 2 other 360's at my address in the last week, mine and a buddy's.
2) Neither of these boxes had anything to do with the COD beta
3) Both of the boxes that accessed Live using the same IP addresses (I have a router, folks) are now banned.
4) I am getting a runaround from tech support, internally and on the 'general' support on the phone.
Time line:
09/02/2007 - The 'bad' 360 with the 'glitched' profile was banned at 9:00PM CST on Sunday.
09/03/2007 - Second 'good' 360 of mine was banned at 9:00PM CST on Monday
09/05/2007 - Third 'good' 360 of my buddy's was banned at 9:00PM CST on Wednesday
The facts:
- One of these boxes should be banned, fair and square.
- The two 'good' boxes have never been opened, are both owned by Microsoft staff, and are in no way violating ANY terms of service, and have never been opened. Hell, the Faceplates have never even been removed.
- If Microsoft is "NOT" banning 360's, and there are not thousands banned, I find this HIGHLY unlikely that it's a coincidence that All three Xbox 360's that have accessed Xbox Live are banned for any reason.
I believe that the logging of the IP address related to a ban is a severe flaw, and is affecting even internal employee's.
Please do not 'flame' me, as I do not deserve it for stating the facts.
I can also confirm that all the GamerTag's associated with these 'banned' boxes are still functional according to Microsoft's farmed out support. (FYI: The support 'tech' people for Xbox Live are not Microsoft, or even a consulting company for Microsoft, they are not even close)
I would just like to state, for the record, that you can count 3 bans at my address, and I'm sure you will start to hear similar scenario's.
I will not comment on any flaming, as this would be a childish issue, but do firmly believe that Major Nelson, and the 360 "Banhammer" team should rethink this move of banning all 360's at any given address that has one infraction. None of my 360's have the same profiles, and all are kept separate for a reason. There is no sense in finding any 'like' between the three boxes, 'cause they all had different items on them, and no duplicates. The only commonalities are the IP address, and possibly a network cable switched once.

douchebag, they don't ban ip addresses, the ban console ids,
you are a freakin' liar
Please read closely. It's not the IP they banned, it's any and all 360's that have accessed that IP. This was actually confirmed by internal support. It was a nice try though. ...::*FSM*::...
