I bought the 360 HD DVD addon when Amazon was offering the 8 movies. So I now have King Kong, 300 and Last Samurai. I just need to wait the 8-10 weeks to get the other ones. I just hope they come through with it.

I have a 55" Sony 768p set and a 37" Westinghouse 1080p set (specifically for games). I have this hooked up through my HTPC using HDMI and the quality looks great on both sets. The Westinghouse looks a little crisper due to 1080p and the slightly smaller screen size but the Sony still looks mighty fine too.

I don't think that HD DVD nor Blu-Ray will "win". By the time the differences are settled, a new format will already be on the horizon and the current DVD owners will leap frog both HD DVD and Blu-Ray to this new format. These formats will be best for DVR purposes and putting recorded programs onto disc.

DVD still looks great and I think it will take the FCC's retirement of standard definition to really push people. That's still like 2 years away and most people will probably be fine with HDTV but still using DVD (or upconverted DVD).

That's just my view. Technology moves too fast these days. It wasn't like it was 20 years ago when there was cassette and then CD took over. It took CD a good 5-10 years before it became entrenched in peoples houses and the quality was vastly superior to cassette (even cassette with Dolby NR). DVD came out a while ago but as others have posted, I think the vast majority of people are content with DVD and are not actively going after either HD format. I think the HD DVD/Blu-Ray battle has been the worst thing for HD... If there was a concensus from the beginning, we would probably already see the migration begin. Instead, there is this battle and many people decided to sit back and not invest in either just in case the other wins. In this situation, options might end up killing the technology.

I've gotta get a new TV before I can bother with BR or HD-DVD, so no on this question.

My laptop has a built in HD-DVD drive, and truthfully never used it.......I usually just watch HDDVD rips if I really am looking for something in HD (plus majority of HD movies released aren't even full 1080p yet). I am glad I have an HD-DVD (wanted that instead of Blue-Ray for various reasons), but truthfully for me it really makes no difference (I want an hd-dvd player so I can rip hd-dvd movies when I get some more money tongue.gif ) to me as 90% of the media I watch is not on a disc, but my hdd, simple hdmi output to my hd-tv and viola, no messing with hdcp compliant bs.

I bought the HDDD player for my 360 and I love it! I heard some people complaining about the color being washed out or something but it looks great on my tv! and with all the free extras, its definitly worth it.

I have the HD DVD add on.... Ut's connected via HDMI through my 360 Elite, to me 50 inch Samsung DLP. I love it. It truly spoils the movie watchers. My only complant with it was when it came out. I got it on launch day and at that time there wasn't a whole lot of title's released. It was a little frusrating but I gave it time like everyone kept saying and now jsut about everything is starting to be offered in HD.

To everyone worried about a failed format you are not thinking it through. The backing is there and their may be NO winner in the business but we will win. If you have a HDTV look at the companys that you usualy watch movies from and buy that format. Soon players will drop in price and if they do not play both formats they will not sell. You will always have the player you buy so you can always watch the movies you buy. If you have kids the choice is easy(HD DVD).

As for quality they are both the same encoding so it is the hardware NOT the format that determins the picture.

For those that have went with HD be carefull of buying dvds that are older releases new to the format. I have found some that seem to be upscaled to HD and not actualy filmed with the intention of HD format. If you have it on regular DVD and have an upscale capable dvd player, do not rebuy it in HD thinking there is a huge difference because there is not always a worthy improvement for the money.

standerd dvd for me. i say let em fight it out untill they both fail. people will indeed leapfrog the format war at least most will. i whont wast my money on any of the new formats anyways. call me when they get off using mpeg style compression and start using h264. i have seen h264 even at low rates blow any other compression meda away.

wow, currently 64% NO - which is where i voted - interesting to see how slow this "new" technology has spread...actually it is not that surprising since the cost is prohibitive for not much improvement in quality, although probably in the next 1-2 years when i redesign my home theater i may move towards one of the optical hi-def formats...

I also don't have one. For one, I don't have a high-def television right now. Two, even if I did I'm not forking out the money to replace my humongous dvd collection. Are you crazy? The difference in quality is not enough to justify the pricing, in my opinion. Blue-ray this, HD-DVD that, the world isn't ready to embrace high-def, despite what all the commercials show on tv.

are they going to be coming out with a black dvd add on soon? cause that's all i'm waiting for. i'd never seen a movie in hd-dvd or blu-ray till this weekend and wasn't really interested. i was at a friends house and i was watching ghost rider and it looked so good not grainy like on my t.v. (normal dvd's on Olevia 747i) turned out it was a blue-ray on ps3 so i'm all about getting one now. (dvd add on that is...)
