whats up guys.

my xbox 360 finally departed last week after a long fight against 3 red lights. a month ago I changed the x - clamps and i got it working again but then i changed the stock fans for the xcm 360 high speed air cooler and the add on fan and it was working ok, except that I was getting a lot of DREs and freezin during gaming which started after installing the xcm fans, last week I tryed gettin the power form under the PSU in the mother board because as many of you know the xcm fans get the power from the dvd drive, so something went terribly wrong when i did that, my drive get fried i dont know why, and my xbox 360 now shows a e74 error screen. this happened when i got the power for the fans from the 12V power points under the psu.

anyway thats not my problem yesterday I ordered a new xbox 360 core system so im planning of installing the xcm fans to my new xbox 360 but I dont want them to get power from the dvd drive or other part of the xbox, so I was thinking buying a external power supply as this one

http://www.amazon.com/Xantech-12v-Regulate...3087&sr=8-1

for the fans, is there any problem if I do this? I know that I woul have to connect the fans independently from the xbox 360 each time I want to play, but thats not a problem for me, gettin the power from thr xbox 360 is not an option, I dont know if theres gonna be any problem between the xbox and the fans because of getting the power from different sources though, installing the fans is a must, I have lost two xbox 360s because of red lights and we all know the story of overheating, the xclamps, blah, blah bah... and the xcm fans really cool down the xbox 360 so i have to install them, i dont want to buy other fans because I already have this ones and I dont have money, this is my third xbox 360 and I want it to be the defenetive one, i want to grow old with this one, and I know that if I dont cool it since the begining its gonna give 3 red lights its just a matter of time I know it, we all know it, I dont want red lights im sick of it, I hate those lights, I have nightmares every night with those darn lights, no more.

ok so my question is if I can connect the fans using another power supply as the one as the above link. and another question, since this experience with my old xbox 360 changed my life I dont want to be soldering stuff for some time, I need to take a break of all that stuff, and I have experience with soldering, but right now im afraid of that, has anyone here found a benq drive or a hitahci 079 in a core system? I would like to flash my drive without soldering right now, im in a crisis right now.

Thank you
Tommyv

its luck of the draw. if you get a new system, your very likely to get a 79fk or a benq. if you want to have a better chance at getting a 78fk or a samsung, get a used system (although this raises your chances of the system dyeing)

as far as the fans go. i would personally say just power them from the 12v source near the heatsink and where the power plugs in. your on the right track about not powering from the dvd's 12v, but the source i mentioned seems safe. there are pics if you search around the forums. basically there are 4 solder pads making a square, and you want the back right corner (looking at the system from the front).

if you really want to power externally, yeah, thats safe.

thanks for the reply man, yeah i really don't want to mess up with the xbox 360, i would prefer to power them externally, I think this is safe, and I want to go safe, I was also thinking that this way, when i finish playing I could let the fans on extra minutes after turning off the xbox 360 to make sure that the console never experiences any extreme temperatures

Interesting idea...

Is there a tut somewhere where it shows how to hook up the stock fan to an external power source? I would really appreciate the guidance.

Thanks!

I had just recently done this.
  1. i found an old phone charger
  2. I Split the lines into positive and Negative
  3. i found 2 pc fans, or in my case i had used an older 360 fan
  4. I soldered the positive and negative wires to corresponding wires from charger
  5. After everything was all soldered up, i taped up the connections with Electrical Tape so ends couldn't touch
  6. Found a good place to put a switch, i used a lightswitch and split just 1 side of the wire and added one to each side of the light switch
  7. now you've got a fan thats placed at the back of the 360 so that it's sucking air out of the console

check this thread about external cooling, I posted some results:

http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=713564

Any 12V 1A adapter is good enough to power stock fans taped to the rear. just connect red&brown to positive and black&blue to neg.

You could make this without the need for switching between console and fan controller if you wanted it to be a lot less complicated. It also wouldn't have to be modular and you could install it directly into the case.

It gives me control of airflow and noise and best of all, I get to keep the fans running after shutdown for as long and as powerful as I deem necessary.
